I'm the aquatics director at our gym. I've mentioned this previously. I've done some hiring tentatively for swim instructors, although at the moment I have to take their word on their ACTUAL skills because our pool is empty and I can't test them until the pool is filled (I *will* have official lesson "tryouts" after the pool is filled.) Pool will be filled sometime next week, opening (after a bit of warming up and chemical balancing) May 1.
On to the vent: CA law requires any lessons offered be given by A) a lifeguard B) someone with CPR training while a lifeguard is in the pool ALSO teaching lessons or C) someone with CPR training while a lifeguard is on deck. So, I had the genius idea to obtain my LGI (lifeguard instructor certification) so that I could train ALL the instructors as lifeguards at cost - thereby limiting the amount of hours I personally HAVE to be at the gym. I mean, I want to be there as much as I can, but recognizing that things happen, I'd prefer to not HAVE to be there. The class is $230 (my personal money) and was Fri-Sat-Sun this weekend (April 11-13). I was going to do the in-water training for staff April 25-27.
Note the WAS.
I got an email this morning that they're going to have to reschedule/postpone the class due to instructor availability. It will either be April 25-27, May 2-4, or May 16-18. Did I mention that our pool OPENS on May 1? So I've spent the morning frantically googling for other LGI classes. It looks like I'm going to have to suck it up and be at the pool CONSTANTLY in May or pay at LEAST $500 (again, my own money) to fly to the LA area and take the course there.
Someone just shoot me. Seriously. Augh.
(P.S. Anyone an LGI? Wanna fly to Norcal and host some LG classes for me? LOL)
Lifeguard certs are one of those super annoying things... I haven't had one current since maybe 2004-ish. Nobody's paying me to guard, the cert's are a PITA to do, they aren't free, etc., so I don't keep them up just for my health. But every so often (being around water as much as I am) it would be handy to have. Like in my swim clinic, we needed an extra guard since I was not certified. Oh well.

Hey, if you're ever out this way and want to recert (challenge) at cost, let me know. After I complete this crazy class, of course.
