I went to Guatemala on a cruise, so I'm not sure if that counts.
My Dad was in Venezuela on business twice. He flew through Caracas but was actually in Barcelona (which was another story as the travel agent nearly sent him to Spain), but I'm fairly sure the port town wasn't any better than Caracas. He definitely said he never has to go back.
I've been to Egypt (not felt dangerous), India (again, not felt dangerous), Detroit (not felt dangerous)
It all comes down to where you go in these places (especially when you are talking about a COUNTRY), though there are a few locations I probably wouldn't choose at this very moment, but several I eventually hope to see.

I went to LA once on vacation. We stayed at a hotel in the downtown area. We got there late in the afternoon so after we checked-in we wanted to grab dinner. We walked up to hotel valet and we asked if there was a place to grab something to eat. He said that there was a California Pizza Kitchen less than two blocks away. We could actually see it and it was less than five minutes away walking. But he told us not to go because it was too dangerous.

GilliC has been to Antarctica, hasn't she? I've been to Syria, but that was before the war. It wasn't particularly dangerous then - there was almost no violent crime.j
Also, who would go to an island with 1-5 venomous snakes per square meter?

I've been to India, it didn't feel unsafe - just more surprising and overwhelming.
I'd certainly go to Detroit if there was a reason to go. There are a ton of those countries on the list I can't go to as an Israeli citizen but outside that, I'd probably consider anywhere depending on the situation.
yeah, this list seems very suspect. I mean, they put Detroit on there because of crime but they didn't list places like Nairobi or Johannesburg? In terms of statistics, I'm sure those places are much higher.
We sort of 'vacation' in Detroit when we visit my ILs (I always play tourist). It never felt outrageously dangerous.
I did step across the border into North Korea when we had our tour of the JSA in the DMZ between the two countries. But as it was within a UN building and guarded by a ROK soldier we were hardly in peril.

Honduras, Ilhe grande Brazil, Venezuela, Guatemala I didn't find any of those places to feel dangerous! In Venezuela we only went out in groups, but never felt unsafe

I've been to Ilha Grande (close to Rio), too, but it's thankfully not the same as Ilha de Queimada Grande.
This is what I was thinking too. I mean I live there but I don't generally think of it as a tourist place...Well, maybe now with the casinos there is more tourism but it still not a lot.
I have been to India (which I kind of side eye for being on the list), Detroit, and Guatemala. I have two friends (a couple) who have been to nearly all of the African, Middle East, and Central Asia destinations - they have some pretty wild stories.
DH just mentioned yesterday that he saw an article showing that central and south america have way higher crime stats than almost anything in africa. South Africa, Nigera, and Congo were on their, of course, but I was still surprised they were lower down. Sorry I don't have the article to show.
Yes, I've been to Antarctica. On the replacement for the ship that sank a few years earlier, at the same time of year in the same region. So yeah, we felt a little unsafe, but we were prepared. My cabin mate and I kept a go-bag ready in case we had to abandon ship, and we paid close attention in the lifeboat drill. They actually had us get in the lifeboat and showed us the controls, so we could have driven it ourselves if we needed to,
India has never felt unsafe to me. I felt much more unsafe in Jo'burg and Maputo.
And I'm surprised the DRC didn't make the list, since their own tourism industry says not to visit right now. Does this mean I can go?! ;-)
