So my cat was just diagnosed and we just got the meds yesterday. I am 18 weeks pregnant. I read the directions and it said to wash hands afterwards or wear gloves. Then it dawned on me that this was just a hormone medication and YES I really should wash my hands no matter what because OMG I don't need thyroid hormones messing me up right now.
I thought I'd ask here though - if you had the same situation - did your OB or vet have a concern with you handling these sort of meds at all? Like, want you to have your DH medicate the cat instead? I'll definitely ask the OB at my apt. next week but I'll be handling it twice a day until then.
If your concerned, I'd just wear gloves for now if you'll need to give it and wash your hands after to be safe. Or just put a call into your OBs nurse tomorrow and see what they have to say.
I'm also pregnant and I have to give my cat medication for hyperthyroidism. I've had one pharmacist tell me I might want to just get DH to give the cat the meds just to be safe, and I've had another tell me it's fine for me to do it as long as I wash my hands afterwards. I'm personally not concerned at all about doing this myself. I figure if you wash your hands immediately after then there's no way you're getting any of that into the body.
Do you use the lotion that goes on the inside of the ear or do you crush up the tablets and put it in the food? If you use the lotion, just make sure you're wearing gloves. Either way, definitely wash your hands afterwards.
