I need to have a HIDA scan (gallbladder function test), the lab told me I need to not breasted feed for 72 hours after the test. No way will I have enough milk pumped for that. I called the pedi to ask for advice and he said I should be fine after 12 hours. I really don't want to use formula, but obviously I will if it would be dangerous to BF.
Anyone have any advice/experience/expertise in this area? I hate how doctors don't know crap about what is really safe for breastfeeding. For example, I had anesthesia while breastfeeding DS1 and was given different answers by my OB, GI doc and Pediatrician about when I could nurse. I went by the answer given by the anesthesiologist because he also did pediatrics patients and seemed to know what he was talking about.
I had 2 CT scans done this spring after DS was born. One had regular IV contrast and the other had IV, rectal, and oral (??, the drink). Both times I was told I couldn't BF for 24 hours. I tried with the first one to give DS a bottle of formula (I had just started BFing and didn't have any pumped milk) and he refused. I finally gave in after 7 hours because I couldn't stand it.
The second one was a month later and I, again, tried to give a bottle but he held out.
Both times I did plenty of research that basically said the amount of contrast that gets into the milk supply is very minimal. So I felt fine continuing to breastfeed.
See everyone on here has different answers too! Lol. Thanks for asking. I think I have about 24 hours worth now and can probably get somewhere close to another day by then. I will just feed him pumped milk until it runs out I guess which should be 36-48 hours.
When is the test? if you add in a pumping session at night or right after he eats in the morning you might be able to get a couple more bottles worth.
It was supposed to be Tuesday but I called and put it off for a week. I was going to pump in the am (probably get 4 ounces) and before bed (1-2 oz). I stay at home and those are really my only times to pump. DS eats 4oz in a bottle and still eats about 8 times a day. Maybe I will have enough. I kind of suck at pumping this time around though. Sometimes I get less than an ounce.
I am a Nuclear Tech and preform the HIDA scans. We tell our patients 48hrs. You can help get it out of your system faster by eating well after the exam. It is pushed out of your system through the GI tract and eating will help move things along.

Have you tried breast compressions while pumping? If you have a week you might be able to up your supply enough to pump & cover the time you can't bf. Check kellymom for pumping & supply tips. Good luck!
