I have a year and a half to plan this trip, but I did already book our round-trip Greek Isles cruise out of Rome for October 2015. We've never been to Europe so I'm feeling really overwhelmed. I wanted to get an idea of this October's flights to Rome, and I'm seeing airlines come up that I've never heard of. Do you know if any of these are horrible and avoid-at-all-cost companies? At least I could narrow down the list of options later...
Norwegian
Aeroflot
Air Lingus
Turkish Airlines
Are there any you recommend?
If we can't get a good flight out of Orlando, we may just fly to New York and leave for Rome from there.
At the risk of asking a dumb question (because you probably can't change your trip), are you doing this cruise in the beginning, middle, or end of October?

I don't have any personal experience on those airlines, but I'd be shocked if you can't get a good flight out of Orlando. You have a ton of time, so don't get jumpy & book too soon. I just purchased our tickets for our late August/early September trip, (so just over 4 months out). We're flying Jacksonville to Rome, with one short layover in Charlotte. Orlando should have more options than Jax.

Virgin Atlantic also flies out of MCO. The UK has a pretty hefty departure tax though, so it might be expensive to fly through there.
I was going to suggest looking at Icelandair our of Sanford, but it looks like they don't fly to Rome, only Milan. I would be willing to take a train from Milan to Rome if I got a good deal on airfare, but if you are already overwhelmed it might not be worth it.
Are you talking about flights to/from Europe or within Europe? I love Norwegian, but I'm not sure I'd fly them long-haul. We considered it for an upcoming trip, and it was actually cheaper to fly a regular airline, so there was zero point to flying a LCC, even though I frequently skip the included extras like meal service and entertainment systems.
And I agree that it's a bit early. Prices will fluctuate hugely when various airlines have sales, and flight schedules are not unlikely to change in 18 months, so unless you're looking at a simple direct flight, the great flights you book now could easily end up with a screwy layover later on.
PS - If you do want to start planning, go to kayak.com and set up a fare alert for the dates you want to fly. Then they'll email you a summary once a week, so you can watch how prices go up and down as different carriers have discounts. Do that for a few months or more, and you'll know later when you see a great deal.

Yes, that is what I am going to do in the next day or two. I am setting it up for this year with a couple US to Italy cities so I can get an idea of price. There are a couple others who are thinking of joining us so getting an idea for air options and budget is important for planning purposes. We don't need flights within the country because we are planning to take trains to the few places we need to go in Italy. I am not buying anything any time soon so this inquiry is for my own learning to stash away for next year.

Is the Turkish flight actually Turkish? Or is it a United Code share? I've had ones that are a few hundred cheaper to book through Turkish, but were United flights.

Generally speaking Rome will be cheaper from Orlando than Milan. I think you just have to wait, to be honest, even just to look at prices. You should be able to get a flight with an airline you are more familiar with at a decent price. And for some of the airlines you mention the connection would suck.
I've flown out of Orlando with Aer Lingus. At the time they didn't fly every day, but it was a decent flight. I prefer Lufthansa through Frankfurt or Delta via Atlanta (not Paris).

I'd also look into flying within Italy. I've found it is frequently cheaper and faster to fly.
Only one of this I've flown is Turkish Airlines. I've only flown them domestically within Turkey, but they were good. My friend who lives in Istanbul prefers them, and she flies with them quite a bit.
