I can't find one damn pair of running shoes that I like, and I was seriously unimpressed by the girl who did my fitting.
But, I actually NEED running shoes because I've gotten off my ass and actually started, you know, running, which is a very good thing.

Sorry you're having a hard finding shoes, good ones are so important! Did you go to a running shop? Even if you don't buy there, I definitely suggest going to one so they can assess your gait. (http://www.roadrunnersports.com/ has a VIP program that costs only $2, and will give your 20% off your first order, plus fast free shipping... way worth it!)
I'm a huge fan of Brooks myself, and I can attest to their longevity. I had my last pair for 5 years, and over 1000 miles. I mildly pronate, so the Ravenna 3 is my (current) shoe of choice (just got my new pair yesterday).

Thanks meegs! I did try the local Road Runner because it's pretty close to my work, but I was not impressed with the girl who helped me at all (wide width? When you don't even have my foot in the Braddock device properly? I don't think so). I ended up going to the local running store yesterday and got some from there. I wasn't sure because I know I overpronate some and he put me in a neutral shoe, but it felt really comfortable and I ran in them today on the treadmill and felt good. Plus two of the three pairs he had me try were good and I would have bought either (Brooks and Saucony), compared to one possible shoe out of a dozen that I tried on at RRS that I wasn't happy enough with to buy. The price was pretty average and I'd rather spend a little more to support a local business. If these work out and I want to just replace them later I'll look into the RRS VIP thing.

If it makes you feel better, shoe people always tell me I over pronate, but every time I wear a shoe for that, I get shooting knee pain. When I use the neutral shoe, I am fine. So, whatever is my new philosophy with shoe salesmen.
While I have tried other shoes, I always end up buying the Nike Air Pegasus. Apparently Nike knows my feet.
