i really need some new gym shoes and not sure what to look at. I do some light running (5-8 miles a week) and mostly light/moderate weight training. i'd like shoes that are good for both. i had to toss my nike free's as they caused some toe issues and am currently using some pretty old new balances. my sisters are big runners and love brooks, but im not sure that its the way to go since im not really doing heavy running. any suggestions are appreciated!
Nanos might be a good option for you, although I personally don't wear them since I run more than lift nowadays. They are lightweight and on the flatter side (which I generally prefer for lifting). I don't see them being a problem for running a few miles here and there but if you decide to pick up your mileage, it would be best to get fitted and invest in a running shoe.
I'd get fitted at a local running store, they should be able to help you find something that works for running and strength training. I just wear my old running shoes when strength training.

I beat the crap out of my Brooks doing weights and plyo with them. They were fantastic for running though. I'm getting the same Brooks again just for running and using some of my older sneakers for weights and plyo for a while longer. I haven't really found the perfect lifting shoe for me yet.
I second the idea of going to a running to get fitted.
My non-running shoes are New Balance. I have a pair of Hi-Rez's that are awesome, very much like being barefoot. And a pair of Minimus' which are a bit more hefty but still a minimal shoe.
