We found that for high-value conforming loans, their rates were much higher than what a local broker could get us (1% higher). We use USAA for everything else, but I'd suggest shopping around before picking them for a mortgage.
Anyone got a mortgage from USAA? I heard they are good to work with. What kids of perks/discounts do they offer? Do they have better rates? Thanks!
We have our mortgage with them. I haven't found any significant benefit or discount. In fact, they don't and can't link it online with your other accounts, they don't service it and they refused (until we raised hell) to let me do deposits to my checking account from my iPhone because I didn't have a loan from them. Um...how is a $340k mortgage not a loan? I'm taking my mortgage elsewhere when we refi next month.

USAA is great in all regards if you have stellar credit. I have had nothing but good experiences with them (banking, credit card, loans, insurance, you name it) but per my brother, if you screw up they make you work really hard to get back in their good graces.
We are buying a house right now using them for the mortgage; we didn't with our current house.
We enrolled in their movers advantage program, that is helping us sell our current house and get us a new one. Perks include them partnering us with a realtor in both cities, having a USAA contact that made sure things were happening (some recourse if we ran into issues), and cash back at closing. You can use that without their financing but we are doing it all through them.
For this loan, the rate was the same as other banks and they give a cash bonus if they don't close on time. Since we're moving cross country, an accurate closing date is uber important to us.
We've had on and off success with USAA. We yanked our homeowners from them and while they went out of their way to win us back, their rates were ridiculous. But, we keep other things with them. We are just in the beginning stages of buying this house so I can't give a rant or rave but wanted to mention the perks... such as they are.
