The other one is the inverted row. I would set up a bench under the smith machine to support my legs, then do the chin up/pull up. Less weight but works the same muscles. If you get the right angle, you will be working similar muscles to the pull up.

I've found that both of these are far more useful than the lat pull downs in transitioning to a pull up, especially the negative chin ups.
