The leaks are mainly up the back or on the side (depends on if he's laying on his back, or if he's on his side like while nursing). I can't imagine my 3 week old would need size 2s....though it could definitely be a chubby leg/skinny leg issue (he has skinny legs). And it's entirely possible that we're just not quite doing it right :-)
We had this a lot at that age as well. We would "point down" but it would still happen - A LOT. For us, it was more an age thing, not a diaper thing. As he got a little older/bigger he became less and less frequent and now it rarely happens at 3 months old. I still think it's a good idea to try different diapers to see what you like, but in our case that didn't solve this problem.

When DS was two weeks old, he leaked out of half of his diapers. He went through a LOT of clothes. It was due to his extremely skinny legs and diaper brand didn't matter. It got much better after 4-6 weeks though. And we got more brave about putting the diapers on tighter. Like someone else mentioned, we just had to get the hang of what we were doing!
For awhile, he always leaked when I put the diaper on but not DH. That's how we figured that one out :-)
We switched from Pampers to Huggies Boys and I love them. I love that it's designed to hold more liquid in the front for boys since that's where it all goes. And it has a snugger fit in the back for poop explosions. I also liked that there are smaller ranges of sizing. Pampers were too big on him even within his weight range.

We use pampers baby dry during the day and buggies overnights in 1 size up at night. Once in a whole I will buy target if we need to fill in between my subscribe and saves. The pampers def hold more though.
