They can be like pets & have different personalities and fresh eggs can't be beat.
That said, I'll never have them. My mom grew up on a farm. Of all of the farm chores, cleaning the chicken coop was her most dreaded chore. I'm sure a lot has changed since then, but she might disown me if I even seriously thought of getting them! That's not even touching her stories of slaughtering them. Ugh! Raise chickens like food-producing pets, then eat them? Not for me.
Fresh eggs are great and all... but growing up in Ohio and seeing a few to many Chicken Coops has convinced me that I will never have chickens in my back yard.
Someone told me (don't remember who. I think it was at a party) that they're becoming an urban pest issue now. They escape from all of the hipster's back yards and go feral.
Oh also, if we move to a place with a couple acres I would like to keep a couple chickens for the eggs. Fresh eggs are yum and it's a great way to teach kids responsibility, how to care for animals, where our food comes from, ect
There's really nothing to get. Like all things, it's for some and not for some. It takes all kinds.

Omg this mental image is bringing GREAT JOY right now. How can the hipsters run in those tight pants?

Besides the eggs and meat (for those that will butcher them), they are a natural pest control. They eat a lot of bugs and will also go after snakes/lizards. It doesn't work as well when they aren't free-range though.
