Lurker coming out because I would really appreciate some suggestions.
When my husband is home he eats whole foods/raw/plant strong. I imagine being gone means he'll have to just eat whatever he's given or has access to so I'd like to mail him some healthy snacks.
What kind of snacks should I include in care packages when the time comes? I guess I am looking for healthy options with minimal processing, sugar, sodium, etc.. So far all I have come up with is some stuff from the baby food aisle and some nuts!
I am new to this way of healthy eating and a little inexperienced so I am fresh outta ideas. I have access to SoCal stores which should make this easier... thanks a bunch!
**I will also post on Health and Fitness in case they have ideas but since you're experienced with what ships well vs. what doesn't, I wanted to ask here.
For DH, he really liked dried fruit and nuts. The rest of what he liked might not be as big for your DH, but from your description, that's what I'd look for.
If you have a Trader Joe's near you, they are known for having high quality dried fruits and nuts.
Other things I sent DH were Kashi bars, tea (and the stuff to brew tea), jerky, homemade cookies, etc.
I also sent a goodly amount of silly things that were not food related, which might be a good idea for you. Silly things from the target $1 bins, used books by authors he likes, magazines, travel games, cards, bocci balls, frisbee, etc. It's not _unhealthy_, even if it doesn't qualify as healthy...

Chicken pox? Chemical pregnancy?
Oooooh, care package!!!!
You can't really send raw produce, and he should generally have access to fruits and veggies (is that what "plant strong" means? Never heard it before). So, trail mixes, dried fruits and nuts are about all you can do on that front. My friend loved some of the mixes I got her from target and whole foods.

I send fruit cups to my husband- the ones packed in 100% juice or water, not heavy syrup. He said there often isn't fresh produce in the chow hall, so he appreciates them. It's really difficult to find non-junk food that ships well, so my care packages are all pretty much the same, but he says he likes them.
He also likes Muscle Milk protein drinks, although if you want to go the non-processed route, that's probably not the best choice.

My H has been to damn near every FOB, COB and any other type of base in the Ghan. He said it is very rare that they ever have fresh fruits and veggies. There MIGHT be salad every couple of weeks and it goes really fast. Every thing is pretty much canned. I send him fruit packed in juice as often as possible as well as dried fruits. We have a lot of friends who are "Paleo Freaks" as they call themselves. Their wives pretty much send them a ton of nuts, dried fruit, natural peanut butter and supplements. Their diets go to crap otherwise while they are over there. There are vegetarian options in the chow halls, but they are still pretty processed. I'd head to the health food stores and see what you can find that fits into his diet and send it as often as possible.
