I guess I could post this in the Thankful Thursday thread but I didn't want it to get lost in there. I mentioned in the Wednesday whines post that my dad was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer last Thursday. He had a scan on Monday to see the extent of it and determine the best course of treatment.
We got the results today, it was the best bad news we could have asked for. The cancer is still confined to his prostate. There are "some abnormalities" on his spine they'll watch according to my mom, but the doctor said they're not typical of cancer. They're starting him on hormone injections next week to reduce his testosterone and will start radiation in a few months. Apparently they warned him he might get more weepy than usual, which you would find hilarious if you knew my dad, he is a total crier normally so this should be interesting! They believe his prognosis is good at this point and it was caught very early.
The scary part is that he found out because a PSA test came back elevated, but the doctor told him that most of the time it's nothing so a biopsy was up to him and he opted to do it. I can't imagine if he had waited and they didn't discover it until later.
Thanks for all the love and support, I really appreciate it.
My dad found out he had Leukemia "by accident" as well. He went in for something else and they found it at that appointment. Thank goodness for "good accidents" I guess. ;-)
So glad you got positive news!! My step dad just had surgery for his prostate cancer last year. All fingers & toes crossed that the good news continues!!
That's good news! Well, as good as you can get in this situation. I'm SO glad he had the intuition to get it checked out. My first boss at a family business figured something was wrong, but didn't go in until his wife forced him and it ended up being too late for him. SO much easier to treat and recover in the earlier stages!
I hope the treatment and the rest of this is smooth sailing for your family, and that he has the best outcome possible!
