Does it get less absurd? I was amused, but my H was in hell. He basically said that it's a waste of an hour and if it doesn't get better fast, he wants to drop it from our netflix queue, but I want to at least make it to the 10th, to see how it is, since everyone seems to love David Tennant.

Does he like other Brit-Sci-Fi-campy things? If not, the Doctor might not be for him.

He likes sci-fi and campy, but he said his issue was that this episode was campy and bad. He's of the opinion that Eccleston is the only one, so far, that can act. I'm going to make him watch it, anyways.

It is absurd, but it's meant to be, you know? I loved Eccleston from the start and was very resistant to David Tennant initially, but he eventually became my favorite.
I adore Doctor Who, but that being said, it is not for everyone. I would try to stick with it for a few episodes though. Some of the early ones are kind of weak (although I really like the second). If he can make it through four or five episodes and still not like it, it's probably not for him. But I think the first season really gets good around episode 6 or 7. (And then The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances are my favorite of that season.)
I will admit the first time I saw it, I was like Ehhh. My sister made me watch the second episode and I enjoyed it more. It has really grown, and improved each season so far. We are almost done with the last season, I don't know what my son is going to do when its over. As soon as he is off the bus he starts asking for Doctor.
It does get better. I first watched the first episode with the most recent doctor (Matt Smith) because DH is a longtime Doctor Who fan. I thought it was ridiculous and turned it off after 10 minutes.
After that, though, I caught snippets of when DH watched it and became much more interested. Personally, I think the Matt Smith episodes were more engaging.
The thing is to, basically, suspend all notions of reality. That helps it seem less absurd.

Nine's first few episodes are REALLY ridiculous. It gets way better. A PP mentioned The Empty Child. Once you get past that, it's like you're drawn in for life.

Yeah if he didn't like silly then he may want to sit out for episodes three and four. The Slitheen aren't going to improve anyone's opinion of Doctor Who. If you can make it to The Empty Child, it gets pretty brilliant, but it's always going to be a little silly and campy.

I admit, I don't love Tennet. I'd give it a few episodes , it isn't really my bag either but I grew to love it.
It took me a while to get into Doctor Who as well, and I'm a huge scifi/geek/all things British fan. If my husband hadn't kept watching, I'm certain I wouldn't have been a fan.

You've said everything I was thinking. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances are the episodes that really made me love this show.
The Empty Child was just brilliant! UP to then, its pretty uneven. I just finished the first 2 episodes with Martha Jones & Tennant last night and sigh...I was swooning at Tennant's sexy casual come-hither building lean, wink, and go into the alley.
starfish - has your son seen any of the older Doctors? Maybe after 12 you should start back to the beginning with One? They can be REALLY uneven but if he's going through Doctor withdrawals, then maybe going back to the origins and watching up through 8 will help? I stopped partway through Second Doctor to jump ahead to the moderns so I can hopefully catch up to new episodes before they're all over.

We planning on that, or hopefully getting him into something else. Its Star Wars, Doctor Who, and power rangers all day. Thomas has fallen out of favor since he discovered them.

Try Star Trek next? Then you won't run out for a long, long, LONG time as you'll have your choice of, what like 10 movies (I've lost track), OST, TNG, DS9, Enterprise...

He did not like Star Trek, we think it did not have enough slapstick or robots. My Daughter loves Kirk, when she watches it, she will talk to him when he is doing his log. At Dragoncon last year she saw his panel and refused to believe that was Kirk. She kept telling my husband that was a grandpa not her Kirk.
