I was excited and about to sign up for Miami Beach on March 1, 2015. Then I realized - I'd need to do all my training on the treadmill huh? I live in New England, and usually there's too much snow/ice on the roads to even try to run outside in Jan and Feb. I was really liking this idea because it was going to be our first family vacation and I want to escape winter for a bit next year. But that's not going to work well, right? Any ideas on other halfs, or how to get around this issue?
I live in the NE too, and would not want to do a 3/1 half. Mid-late April is nice. I would probably take the warm weather vacation at the time of year when you'll most want it, and do a local half. There are plenty. The vacation & race don't need to be the same trip.
I think I'd probably look at another date/race too. It was high 60's and sunny Monday, and I got sunburned and melted after training in the cold. I'm a weather wimp. I think training in the cold and going somewhere like Florida would be harsh. I love vacationing around that time though just to get out of the cold. I think Susie is right on, with taking a trip around that time, but maybe doing a local half. Kiawah is tempting though!
I do a half each year in February to motivate me to run throughout December and January. Because it's dark all the time and the roads are snowy, all my weekday runs are on the treadmill. I just do my long, Sunday, runs outdoors (and even then, probably 1/3 of those end up being on the treadmill because of extreme cold).
So, I'd say that if you want to do that race, sign up for it!
Running on packed snow is actually easier than walking on packed snow, so it's not too bad at all.
I trained for the NYC half in NY in Jan/Feb. I did do most of my short runs on the treadmill, but was able to get outside for my longer runs on the weekends. Just had to bundle up and be careful.

I did a 3, 4, and 5 mile race series in Feb/March this year north of Boston. I did long runs on the weekend and did short indoor runs on the treadmill during the week. I think you would be fine to train especially if you have access to a treadmill and/or indoor track.
