I posted this in travel and am diligently googling as well, BUT is anyone here local to the Tucson area? H has a conference there next week and will have preplanned activities most of the time but wants to do a little exploring (mostly of the restaurant variety) in his free time. Any recommendations?
We have talked about taking the end of the week/weekend to do a short trip so if meet him there on Tuesday night, I could have a day to do a solo trip in the area. I REALLY want to drive to Mexico, though. Has anyone ever done this and crossed the border at Nogales? Thoughts? Safe? Fun? Mexican food and markets and traveling are pretty much my 3 favorite things in the world, so I think it sounds awesome but would love input!
'Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body. But rather, to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, screaming 'Woohoo! What a ride!' So every day is a holiday and every meal a feast."
Unfortunately when I was in Tucson last I was there for work and was sick. I remember eating at Beyond Bread, which was sort of like the local Panera or Atlanta Bread Co. but a lot better. It's soups, sandwiches, breakfast, and such. Because I was sick I didn't get out much except for the class I was taking for work.

I strongly urge you to NOT go to Nogales. And I beg you not to go alone. I would probably pee myself if someone asked me to go to Nogales alone. I went there plenty as a young 18-22 year old person to drink homemade tequila and buy tortillas, but looking back, my experiences were not safe. And that was years ago, supposedly the border has become a lot more dangerous since then.
I don't have much experience with Tucson so unfortunately I don't have much to suggest. But, you can definitely find good mexican food in the city! And the weather is pretty nice still so you go hiking and stuff.
