So my hip hurts. It started a couple weeks ago after a 5 mile run on a treadmill. Five miles isn't particularly far for me. Prior to that week, I had taken two weeks completely off. I've had hip/IT band pain before, but this is different. It is not in the joint - it hurts on the bone - where my pelvis sticks out. If I poke that spot, it hurts. It almost feels like a bone bruise or something, but I don't remember doing anything to it. I'm a total klutz though, so who knows what I did.
I haven't run further than 3 miles at a time since then, but I have been running 3-4x a week. It doesn't hurt while I am running, but it hurts after. Even though I'm not running a lot, I am trying to push my pace. I think running is making it worse, or at least not helping it get better.
My next race is a super-sprint tri on June 1 - 225 yard swim, 8 mile bike, 2 mile run. Due to the distance, I'm not really worried about the run, but I want to keep up my running because I'm hoping for a big half PR in the fall.
Anyway, I'm guessing it's time to take time off running. Think it's still okay for me to ride my bike? I am planning to swim (if no thunderstorms)/bike this evening, so maybe I'll see how it feels after that. Any ideas what this could be? It's not terrible, but I am hobbling around a bit, especially when I first stand up.

Could it be that your pelvis is out of alignment? This happened to me over the summer. I happened to be going to PT at the time for something else, so he was able to diagnose me and put it back into place. It was sore, but significantly better within a couple days once the soreness went away. I would check with a dr to be sure, though.
I had that, I was convinced I had bone cancer. My cousin is a PT. She put a seat cushion in my car and it went away. I think something was out of alignment.
Sounds like hip flexor. You also have a bursa there which could be inflamed and account for why it feels like a bruise when you push on it. It is very common for a hip flexor strain to pull the pelvis out of alignment. I would stretch and ice and if it doesn't go away soon to try and get into PT

It's hard to tell where things hurt on your hip but I was having hip pain a few weeks ago. I ended up figuring out that I had some tight muscles in there and massaged the pain away by rolling on a softball (or tennis ball) to release them. It improved over the course of a week doing that.
If stretching, massaging, and rest don't work, you probably need to go to the doctor or PT.
