The only times I wear a hat while running (and I actually don't wear hats, but do wear visors) are if it is dumping down rain, or if I'm running at night and need a headlamp (if I don't wear a hat the headlamp moves around too much and bruises my forehead). In the winter I'll sometimes wear a headband.
I love wearing hats to help shade my eyes and most of all keep my hair back. Hair bands generally don't stay put for me and I end up messing with it during my runs which is highly annoying to me.
I just started wearing a visor recently on long runs because I was afraid it would rain on race day. I'll wear it rain or shine now as it keeps the sun out and keeps my hair back. For some reason, it's less annoying to me than a headband.

I love my hats. They keep my hair up and the sun out of my eyes. Also I sunburn easily so it helps in that department as well. Also when it rains it helps with that. Though after yesterday's race I think I'm going to have to find a visor I found it pretty warm to wear one.
1. If it's raining/drizzling, to keep rain out of my face/eyes. 2. If it's not quite bright enough to justify sunglasses, but might get sunny or is just generally a little bright, to keep light out of my eyes. 3. In a tri, to keep the flyaways contained. After getting my hair wet in the swim, then pulling a helmet on it on the bike, then sweating all over it, all bets are kinda off by the run. My hair is very curly, so the flyaways frizz. Not cute.
i have a few hats that work as a self-cooling device (they soak up the sweat and the wet hat keeps your head cool). I prefer that when it's super hot, and a visor the rest of the time, so that I can wear my hair in a bun on the top of my head. That is what sucks about hats, you can't do that.
but mostly its for keeping the sun off your face.
I usually get a visor when I sign up for a triathlon so I since I have a bunch, I figure I should wear them.
I ran with a legit running hat today for the first time because I forgot my sunglasses, and I definitely needed something to shade my face. I have to say, it wasn't bad! I am also not a hat person, and the one other visor I have is super heavy. This was nice and light and kept me cool while also shading my face.
I am not a hat person otherwise but in the sun/ heat I wear a lightweight white running hat from my local fleet feet. Keeps the sun off my head and face, and I also wet it down sometimes before heading out or during a long run.
