My MIL gave us some kind of metal plates when the kids were little. THey have held up amazingly well, easy to wash, etc. Maybe check into something like that too?

Ooo! I forgot about stainless steel. That's what her lunch box is made of. It doesn't shatter and is dishwasher safe.
I'm getting Corelle for our cabin as soon as people finish breaking the Ikea set it came with. Which should happen in a month or two. I don't mind some of the new patterns and love it is indestructible.
Correlle is pretty durable. We have a few peices that we've picked up from wal-mart or target...probably knock-off and not name brand, but has held up really well. Not sure if it's 100% toddler -proof, but I'd feel better about microwaving it than plastic..,.
Love correlle. I have 4 sets. They light eunough for the little ones to carry. Durable enough to withstand years of family dinners. Made in the usa... no lead....like imported dishes have.
It's almost unbreakable, but when you do break one it shatters into an insane amount of tiny sharp pieces.
This is true. Still, we switched to Correlle for everyday meals once the boys came along, and it's been awesome. It takes a lot to break them, so they haven't even chipped one yet.
We use it and let the kids use it as toddlers. Dd1 did break one (thrown on the porcelain tile floor) but we've only lost 1 in the 6 years we've had it and many of them have been dropped.
Also, if your kids are into divided plates, they make those too in both lunch and dinner plate sizes.
I LOVE Corelle. That's all we used growing up and we only ever broke one, but that was because somehow it went flying out of my hand like a frisbee and hit our tile floors. It did make a huge mess, cracking into many shards. But as long as your kid is old enough to not throw things, you should be fine. I have a set I bought after college that is pristine over 10 years later (and will probably last a lifetime). Worth the $40 at Walmart for sure!
I switched to Corelle for my kids plates about 6 or 7 years ago and we haven't had any problems so far. I bought mine from Walmart and bought 4 plates and 4 bowls rather than buying a whole set. Only 1 plate has broken so far and I think that was my fault and not the kids.
I grew up using only corelle (once I was past age 5 or so). I was a clumsy kid/teenager and never broke any of those dishes. When I got married I only registered for Corelle dishes and love them so much.
Someone gave me a couple Corning Grab-Its when I got married the first. They were awesome for DS- they're more substantial than Corelle (more like the French White). They have a "handle" and short sides which helped him learn to use utensils.
They aren't made anymore, but they have legions of fans snapping them up on ebay. Who knew?

Someday I will but a set of Correlle to match my grandmas dishes from when I was little. White with olive green flowers around the edge. I found one bowl at goodwill and it makes me smile every time I use it.
I read something about Corelle plates spontaneously exploding when we were deciding on new dishes. I hope they fixed whatever was causing that mess.
How would a dish spontaneously explode?
I love Corelle. Made in the USA. Very durable. Square or round and they are making better patterns now.
No clue. I read all kinds of stories with dishes just sitting on the counter, in the sink, in the dishwasher, in the cabinet, etc and people would just hear an explosion.
