My coworker was telling me about this the other day. I asked what if you're tagged and you don't want to do it? She's like "well.. You just HAVE to!" Um what? No. Not happening.
i'm unhelpful. i jumped in the river with my youth group wearing my church shirt. we had one friend film herself getting in her shower with her swimsuit on. LOL!
what a bunch of fucking grinches in here. i mean, people do 5ks and walk-a-thons and all kinds of stuff for charity and nobody accuses them of being an AW or tells them to just donate the money and to skip the race. jesus.
I am happy being a grinch. Making a huge to do about donating $10 to charity is incredibly AWy. I'd totally eyeroll friends who made a huge deal of 5ks or walk-a-thons if their fundraising goal was $10.

Doing something you already do (running/walking) for charity isn't exactly a stretch. Also, no one tags me and mandates that I run. This BS with the cold water challenge is stupid. Give/don't give. I don't care. I don't want to hear about it.

This is where I'm at. I don't like the tag someone and they "have" to do it thing. If I do the walk for animals as a fundraiser, it's because I want to.

Not sure how cold your bodies of water are there right now, but this is turning into a big debate here in Minnesota. It's literally NOT SAFE to be doing it on your own like that. Now for people in southern states...pffft, NBD. Still dumb maybe, because why not just donate the money...but whatever.
We do have tons of locations that do legit polar bear plunges in the winter, which benefit the MN Special Olympics. But those are large organized events, with divers in wet suits standing in the water where you jump, to help just in case. Also medical staff nearby just in case. And you go straight from the water to a big heat-wind tunnel. Totally different (and such a blast - I've done it twice and intend on doing it again).

It's 80 here today, so that shouldn't be an issue. The pond in my apartment complex is super nasty. But the Great Miami river might be an option if it's not flooded.
hmmm. I think the people on my Facebook are doing this wrong. The ones I've seen are not doing it for charity-- it's a drinking thing where they pound a beer then jump in.
I hate it marginally less if its affiliated with a donation, but thankfully I'm too old (ha) for anyone to consider tagging me anyway. (It's all early 20s folks on my feed)

I guess I was talking more about the water temp itself, which in the cold states can stay pretty freezing for a awhile even after spring has arrived. It's going to be 80 here today, too - but the ice just went out maybe 2 weeks ago so the lakes are probably still dangerously cold.

Oh there's alcohol involved with these. But yeah, people are donating $10 to a charity after they do it. It's going around my gym and there's even a box for collecting money at the front desk.

Yeah, EW, don't do it in the pond!
I just talked to my H and he wants to try the river. The government website says it's 58 water temp.

I personally LOVE hearing about people who do this, get hurt/stuck/whatever, and then emergency personnel have to rush down, hop in and help them not die. That's why it is rage-worthy. It is stupid. Add in the AW component and you have just doubled how much I hate you.
ETA: We still have ice on our lakes and the rivers are running dangerously high because of snowmelt.
