I seriously think DH stalks pinterest or something because over the past few months he's done this to a wall in our basement (this is not our actual wall):
he's already put the wood together and stained it and we've picked out a quote that we both love from a song we like, but it's my job to get the quote ON the wood. I don't know how! Would those vinyl decal things work? Stencils?
Are the sheets that can be cut with those craft cutting machines that look like paint? That would be the easiest.
If that isn't a thing, I have used carbon paper to trace lettering onto stuff and hand paint it. Stencils usually look like crap for that sort of thing. At least when I try them:)
Unfortunate note--this is a project that is way harder to execute well than it seems like it should be in my attempts

Ok, bear (bare? I just realized I have NO clue which is correct here!) with me. Get something like this:

It looks like they used vinyl. You could always make a vinyl stencil.
ETA: nevermind it was painted. I think a vinyl stencil would be an easier way though!
This is what I would do. The vinyl stencil will hold better, but it won't look quite as perfect as using straight vinyl letters
Clearly, I'm dumb. What's the difference between the vinyl stencil and a vinyl sticker? You cut it out to your own liking, then stick it on, paint inside and remove the stencil? So it's just a sticky stencil or is it something you keep on?

I think stencil also - and yes, you can do vinyl stencils where you lay it over the wood, paint in the stencil area, then remove and the painted words are there.
Oh and CB2 has walls like that, so if he's like my DH, he saw the plank walls there.

Yep, just a sticky stencil. You can buy a vinyl sheet at Michael's and just cut them out to be stencils. Then you can slap them on the wood, paint and take them off without ruining anything. The sticky just makes it easier than fighting with paper
