I love this! I already told you this, but I'll tell you again. Gutting it out & pushing towards the end, once you realize that your goal is missed, is no easy feat. IMO, it is one of the toughest things to do in any race, but especially the marathon. I know a 2 min PR is not what you were hoping to celebrate, but it is still something to be proud of. Congrats!
I love this post so much. I know how frustrating it is to miss a goal when you trained hard, but you still PR'd and fought till the end. That is something to be proud of. I enjoyed reading about your conversations with other runners. I love that about smaller races. Congrats again!

That was so beautifully written.
The marathon is a finicky beast. I'm glad your walking away with a PR and your head held high.
All the work that went into training and racing a marathon is a tremendous accomplishment. But you know that Your explanation of what "feeling good" means during a marathon spot on.
Beautifully written. I really love that you make mention of the fact the the marathon distance demands your (general your) respect. There's no floating through for anyone. There are just too many factors to be sure you will hit your goal.
But, since you are clearly capable, the day will be so sweet when the thousands of other factors align and sub 4 happens.
I agree too, that turning on the gas at the end when you know your goal is out of reach, shows incredible determination, discipline, character - those things go far beyond running.

I agree with the others - this is a fabulous recap. I am sorry you didn't reach your goal, but 4:03 is still amazing. I don't have any doubt you will get there. Congrats on the race and on putting in the hard work through the training cycle.
