I just picked up my very first foster ever (2 week old kitten), and I don't know what I'll do when the time comes- but I think my DH will have a harder time letting go. I'm trying to convince one of my former coworkers to adopt it when it's old enough so I can more easily see it belonging to someone else.
You get another foster quick enough, and it will only hurt for a minute.
It is always a little bittersweet (well, maybe except for the puppies- they're pains in the tush and always were short termers, so we didn't get too attached).
We aren't currently fostering, our kids aren't quite old enough to handle the letting go aspect gracefully, and our home is too hectic these days for our old broken dumped dog specialty cases (and we're about to get some pups around here that are keepers, so our hands are full). We made it through some very sad long term cases- our record was almost 7 months- that girl was a mess when she came in. It was really rewarding to see the dogs' progress over the months they were with us, and see how much they were loved with their new families.
Keep pictures and write a little bit about the foster somewhere. It's fun to look back.
niemand88f - two week old kitten?! Oh my, that must be one tiny little thing who requires a lot of work! Yay for a new foster home- may your experience be positive so you can open up again when the time comes!
What a cute little booger- I bet keeping that belly full is absolutely exhausting, though. The sweetest cat I've ever met had neither of his eyes, and you wouldn't really know it. He never bumped into things- puts me-without-my-contacts to utter shame.
I love that he has a yoshi to keep him company- a kitty with excellent taste!
