Babywise does condone CIO. I read it. It said that up to 20 minutes of crying was normal. We attempted a modified version of it ( going in to calm her) with DD for about a week until I decided it wasn't for us. It would have never worked for her. She had silent reflux that wasn't diagnosed until 6 months and screamed in pain every night.
I think much more has to do with the baby's natural disposition. I'm so tired of moms who do BW or have kids who STTN early making it seem like they are better parents and somehow made it happen. Nope, sorry. You got lucky. I did the whole eat play sleep routine and it didn't work. I would have had to let my DD cry in pain until she gave up in order for her to STTN or go to sleep on her own. I did what my child needed. We are not inferior because she needed me in the middle of the night.
I don't know about you - but I can tell when my DD is crying because she's scared/in pain/fussy/just making noise. Even when she was 6mo old (she's almost 18mo now). I have a very hard time believing that babywise or CIO advocates leaving your scared/in pain baby crying for 20 min.

Babywise tells you not to jump up the second you hear your baby fuss... b/c most fussing will go away in a few minutes, if even that long.
A baby in pain is a big difference... and 6 months of silent reflux is going to = a baby NOT sleeping well no matter what you do, if the baby isn't getting treated for the reflux.
One of my twins had silent reflux - it started at 6w and was officially dx by the pedi that week - I'm quite familiar with infant reflux (used to sell Prevacid to pediatricians) so the day it started I knew what was giong on.... he got meds - and once we figured out the meds that worked best for him- he was sleeping normally again.
HUGE difference between CIO, babywise's theory of learning their fuss sounds and not running right in... and ahving a baby untreated for reflux.
I fully admit I did no sleep training and do not judge women who do, as long as they do not cry it out. I can not stand the thought of an infant CIO, especially one under 6 months.
But then, people will judge DH and I for sleeping with our kids since they came home from the hospital.
I wish my daughter would sleep with me. I miss the snuggles. So,etimes I want to crawl in her crib beside her. She wont even nap with me
Yes, well now we have 5 year-old twins who love to sneak in bed with us in the middle of the night. Thank God we have a king size!

We didn't know it was reflux at the time. Our pedi didn't even think it was reflux. We just thought she was colicky. The BW book stated that even getting so worked up that they would vomit was normal. That's not just letting a baby fuss a little. I'm not saying you let your kids CIO using BW, but plenty of parents following BW do.
There were always people advocating for it on my BMB when DD1 was a baby.
I'm very jealous of everyone who has a child who STTN early on. Neither of my kids are sleepers. Abigail was on a schedule from the time we brought her home from the hospital and we tried various sleep training methods while she was younger and nothing worked. She was also a horrible napper until around 14 months. Madison was a better sleeper (although she never really STTN) until she started teething at around 6 months. Even now, she still wakes up at least 2-3 times a night.
I haven't had a good night's sleep in about 3 years.
