And boy was it a long trip! 16 days between Qingdao and Beijing, very little sleep, mostly great meetings. Thankfully got in some good workouts (3 outdoor runs and 3 weightlifting days) while on the coast in Qingdao. The air quality in Beijing was of course horrendous and the hotel temperature was so warm that when I tried to run on the TM I thought I was going to die.
Best food: Peking duck, hands down.
On the last day a group of us got a car at 6:30 am and headed for the best-preserved section of the Great Wall. It was rainy and cool, which worked in our favor since temps were kept low and there were far fewer people on the wall then there would have been on a sunny day. It was foggy and absolutely breathtaking. Also much more of a workout than I had bargained for! Four days later, my calves are still recovering. Add this to your bucket list, folks! Incredible.
I buried this pip in the weekend workouts thread, but here it is again if you missed it.
Welcome home! It's fun to run while traveling and China is an incredible country. In my 15 years of traveling there I have yet to get to Qingdao. Looks so beautiful, I need to get up north. Someday maybe I'll run the great wall marathon...

thom -- my favorite moments were the time up on the wall. I can't even count the number of "wow" moments I had up there. With the mountains and the mist and the fog, it was totally surreal. I also cherish the three early morning (5:30 am) runs I squeezed in Qingdao (Pips in an earlier post) which allowed me to experience the city waking up. So much activity on the boardwalk early in the morning! Tai Chi, stretching, yelling, fishing (and watching others fish), reading the newspaper, whipping spinning tops, gathering seaweed, hair cutting... I was one of the only foreigners out there and also one of the only individuals running. On the last run I ventured into a neighborhood and came out on the other side in a green park, and then found a rocky, less developed beach. It was lovely!
