I teach at an urban high school in Ohio. This morning on the announcements they said that we had a special guest this morning, and it was very last minute.
We all filed into the auditorium, and lo and behold, the Rev. Jesse Jackson was our speaker. Now, normally when I see him on the news, I wonder if he isn't just a huge AW. However, seeing him get my students who are normally rambunctious and loud with each other and apathetic about, to see him get them to stand up and scream "I MATTER! I AM SOMEONE!" was awe-inspiring.
Watching these kids, their whole attention on him, holding their phones up to video record, to take pictures, I could tell he was going to make quite an impression on many of them.
I don't know how or why he ended up at my school, but his message about violence, the pursuit of academics, the rise of the minority really lifted the spirits of many of the kids here. It was a great way to start a Tuesday. ;D

Jessie Jackson came to my high school a billion years ago. He truely is mesmerizing. His message was "Up with Hope, Down with Dope" and he had everyone who had ever tried drugs step forward and vow never to partake again (this was during the Nancy Reagan "just say no" period). Even my stoner friends who were higher than kites at the time of the assembly.
