Ah, RunF, I asked on LE how often/far you ran, I was curious. I am all proud now that I was in the mid-range of what you usually do Do you run the whole time? Like, do you ever have to slow to walk? How fast do you run a mile?
I can't believe you ran in that heat the other day, but way to go!! Just stay hydrated and don't die!
I run between 8-9 minute miles, depending on the heat/weather....I've had to run on the stupid treadmill lately because this heat is just awful. I don't stop at all when I'm running unless I get a drink from the water fountain or something. I'd like to get down into the 7 minute mile range, but I don't know if my body is capable of running at that pace for more than a mile or so.

This heat can seriously bite me.
Hot damn, I can't believe you can do that with no walking!
Also, Moe, I'm not sure what to do with that info.
I don't understand how someone could underestimate their calories if they have a mobile calorie app - they must just be lying to themselves..."Let's see...My burger is gone, so I guess I'll record that I ate half!" :-P Cheaters I tell you...Cheaters!
i usually had to "build" my own meal. it's challenging when you're guesstimating how much a slice of tomato really is (whether it's 1/2" of a "large" or a "small" or a "vine ripened" one)
(actually i did it after i read that article a while ago, using smartpeople? smartweight? smartsomething?. it was interesting, i thought i was hovering around 1200 and i was actually consuming more.)
i'm not saying everyone cheats. it's just that studies have shown that people miscalculate it, and rather often. that's all.
but i'm certain that all of you use it absolutely correctly. all of you.
There was a study that said that people largely underestimated what their actual caloric intake was, even with mobile calorie calculators.
I completely agree with this, labels are confusing, local restaurants are a crap shoot, marinated meats are a gamble, etc. For example, barbeque sauce is approx. 30-40 calories per serving. DH brought home one that is 120 calories per serving ( same amount!). Or sometimes I decide I am to use half a container of something for a recipe. So I times servings per container per calories per serving and divide by 2. Another time I measure out the entire container half the amount and figure out the calories that way. Should be equal, right? Nope labels lie to scale back a little:(
Really, though, it's not that hard to be pretty accurate. I'm not really going to get into specifics, but these apps are pretty sophisticated, and combined with the math skills of a sixth grader and the logic of a 10 year old, you can get pretty close. I couldn't be that far off or I wouldn't have lost weight at the exact rate that MFP calculated for my height, weight, and fitness level.
MFP tells me to have 1.200 to lose 2 pounds a week so I'm trying to stick to that. Wine regularly puts me over though. I need to get my fatty self to the gym to earn that wine.
What are you guys eating to stay at 1200 a day? That seems low. I usually eat between 1400-1800. I have been running lately and that shit makes me hungrier than normal.
Looks like on the days I track I usually eat 1550 - 1850 and I burn anywhere from 500 - 900 depending on the day.
My nets in the past 7 days of tracking are all between 1000 and 1400.
I work out before work (either strength training or a 4-6 mile run) and then have a long run on Saturday. I ride my horse and scoop poop every single day but Sunday. So yeah, the 900 calorie burn seems ridiculous until you realize it's 6 miles of running, 30-45 minutes of ring work and then feeding and mucking.

Not enough
I have a hard time with it to be honest. There really isn't any leeway for "bad" foods (or wine really) at that number... then again I'm trying to lose 20kgs so I should stay away from "bad" foods. I just keep getting shocks at the number of calories in foods I thought to be healthy choices.
The days I succeeded & wasn't hungry were when I filled my plate with veg. Lots of it. It's the only thing that seems low in calories that actually is.

Here is an example of a day where I recorded 1204 calories and didn't exercise, so no extras that day.
Breakfast: medium cappuccino with skim milk, Yoplait Greek honey vanilla yogurt, pumpkin spice vitatop (250 calories total) Lunch: Amy's Light and Lean bean and cheese burrito, topped with a 100 cal packet of Wholly Guacamole (380 cal total) Dinner: A serving of Skinnytaste arroz con pollo (311 cal) Snacks: Banana, one Sam Adams Summerfest beer (263 cal)
Some days it is satisfying enough, but some days no amount of food or calories would be enough for me (like this past Monday).
And I understand that even tracking calories with an app, is not going to be exact. Not all bananas are the same size (and I don't have a scale to weigh my foods), but I think it's a pretty good estimate. Same with heart rate monitors - I know they aren't exact, but it helps me get more accurate than just guessing. Whatever. However I'm tracking calorie and exercise intake is working for me, overall, so if it's a little off, I'm okay with that.
Even if it isn't 100% accurate, I'm better off logging that when I wasn't and I lose weight when I log, so it's obviously doing something for me. win/win.
And it's not hard to stay in the 1200 calorie range when I'm not drinking. Factor wine in there and it gets a bit tricky. I know people who can lose weight eating 1700 calories a day, but I'm not one of them, I wish I were. I eat a lot of smoothies, vegetables, fruits, lean meats, fish. I really do enjoy eating this way, I just wish I could drink more on the weekends.

I think once you get in the habit of tracking (and if you're weighing your food as I do) you can be reasonably accurate, or at least accurate enough to continue your weight loss.
As far as the 1200 calorie thing is concerned, when you're only 5'0" you sort of have to resign yourself to eating the minimum amount recommended per day in order to lose weight. One of the programs (not MFP) suggested I eat 1000 a day. Eff that. Even if I only lose 1/2 pound a week, I'm okay with that.
Anyway, I eat quite a lot with 1200 calories, although there certainly isn't enough for indulgences. Today I'm having:
Breakfast - Kashi Go Lean Berry Crunch cereal with 1/2 cup coconut milk - 2 cups of coffee (1/2 cup coconut milk in one and a Trulia, and powdered creamer in another with one sugar)
Lunch - Tempeh Sloppy Joe and Whole Wheat Arnold Sandwich Thin - 1/2 serving Veggie Straws
Snack - Chobani black cherry yogurt - Apple - Carrot sticks
Dinner - Salad with 4 crispy gardein pieces - Homemade orange marmalade sauce and soy dressing
That comes in around 1250 calories, and I plan on working out today too. If I burn enough calories, I'll add in an Edie's coconut popsicle.
