Define big kid bed however you want. Basically out of the crib. Into the crib-converted-to-the-bed or a twin bed, etc. No, we are not moving our baby. Just thinking of spacing ifwe had a second.

This will depend more on your kid's climbing abilities than age. Some kids are monkeys and it's unsafe to keep them in the crib past 18 months, some (like my kid) are good until 2.5.
We did it out of necessity at 20 mos. (DD was on her way): he went to a toddler bed first, regular twin size bed at 24 mos.
It was surprisingly painless, but he is/was our better sleeper of the two: I'm terrified for the bed switch when DD gets there...I'm sure the second time around is not going to be as easy!

DS never tried to climb out of his crib, but we went to a toddler bed conversion pretty early on. Around age 2? We're waiting until we're sure potty training is solid before we get the twin-sized bed, because it'll be pretty high off the ground and also a foam mattress.
I voted for 18 months, but it was really 19 or 20. We converted the crib to a toddler bed, and about a month later my mom gifted him a twin bed. We put the boxspring and mattress on the floor and use a bedrail. We tried it with the frame and it was too high for him to climb in on his own.
Oh and we switched because DS climbed out of his crib one night. All the furniture was already bolted, so we just converted the crib the next day. We also had to remove the rocker from his room because he would use it for climbing.
We knew DS was about to climb out at 19 months, so we went to Ikea and bought a very low-to-the-floor twin. As we were putting it together, DS asked to play in his crib, from which he almost immediately climbed out. Guess we timed that right!
We switched DS1 to a full size bed at 22 months and switched DS2 to a twin right around the time he turned 2. DS1 never climbed out, but he hated his crib and never slept well in it. DS2 climbed out.

Jack climbed out a couple weeks after his 2nd birthday so his crib got immediately converted to a toddler bed. Now that we have a baby that will need the crib, Jack got moved to a big boy bed a few weeks ago.

DS climbed out a couple of times around 19 months, but then he never did it again. I was in the process of trying to find a crib tent, because there was no way I was ready for him to be loose at night I think they may have discontinued/recalled crib tents, because I couldn't find one.
We moved him to a big boy bed at 2.5 only because #2 was born. He could probably still be happily sleeping in his crib. He still won't get out of bed until I come into his room in the morning, so I probably could have moved him earlier with no issues.
We're dealing with this now. I think tonight will be the first night in a big kid bed!
Ironically it's DS 2nd birthday today.
He can safely climb out of his crib so it's definitely time.
He was able to climb around 18 months, but we realized that he couldn't climb out with a sleep sack on. Now, he can climb out easily with a sleep sack so it's time. His new bed arrived in the mail yesterday so we'll assemble this evening and see how it goes.
Yep, I feel guilty for judging the other day so now I will give something for everyone to judge me about lol.
My 3.5 year old is still in a crib.
Yes, there it is. Why? Variety of reasons. It has never occurred to him to jump out. He really did not consistently sleep through the night until relatively recently and I kind of hate the idea of him waking up and coming into our bed, which I just have this feeling he will do if wakes up and can move about freely. It's also MM. He is going to go straight to a double and every time I go to buy the mattress and box spring, something else goes wrong, breaks and we end up spending money there (one car - $650, second car - $350 and still needs help, bathroom wall collapse - $1500...the list goes on).
DS climbed out of his crib for the first time after he was 2. We gave him a stern "no no no, we don't do that. Yo ucould hurt yourself" talk and he didn't do it again for another 3 months.
Then - he did it again and that is when we felt it was time to move him!
Griffin went into a toddler bed a few months before he turned 3. Then he got a twin bed when he turned 4 and we re-did his room into his "big boy room".
the twins are 3y1mo and still in their cribs -- tehy totally know how to climb out but stopped doing it for some reason- so we're keeping them in there as long as possible - we need them contained to take a shower, get dressed, etc... if they are loose, the 3 of them together = big trouble.
Ugh, both of my kids climbed out before two so we had to move them then. I think it's probably a lot easier if you can wait until they're a bit older though.
We moved DD1 to a twin bed at about 18 mos because we were pregnant with DD2. Good thing since DD2 arrived 2 mos early so DD1 was well transitioned already and we didn't have to deal with that on top of everything else.
DD1 was easy to transition. She stayed in bed and would call for us to come and get her in the morning or after a nap, just as if she was still in the crib.
DD2...forggeddaboudit. We transitioned her at about the same age since we were going to a cottage for the summer and didn't want to cart around a playpen. Put her to bed, go to the living room, sit down, look up....and there she was! Took a good few weeks to convince her to go to bed and stay in bed.
