A couple we've known for a while is having their second child next month. While he makes a decent wage, they are horrible with money and blow it on random crap. Instead of using extra money to buy baby things, they've blown it on junk. They threw away everything from kid #1, just because.
I'd like to send them a baby gift but want it to be totally practical. Since I don't have kids, I'm not sure what I should send. I know the kid will be well taken care of but my usual gift of books, toys, fun outfits won't be as useful. I'm not sure if I should send clothes in multiple sizes, diapers, bottles, blankets, a bouncy seat, etc.
So, what would you buy for them or what did you use the most when you had your kid?
A pack and play? That way if they don't have a crib for the baby they could use that, they can also use it to travel. Or a swing, those are awesome for the first couple of months.

Not having a child, I'd disagree with the mainstream. If they have money, and you know they'll take care of the kid (ie, take care of bare minimum like food and diapers), I'd go for something fun and frivolous. The special things are what this child is going to miss out on.

While I like Sibil's suggestion in theory, in actuality I imagine these parents buying second hand car seats, cribs, etc that may be recalled or not well maintained. I say buy a convertible car seat. We have one that we bought for about $60.
