DS prefers tummy sleeping. He will sleep on his back if we co-sleep but not in his crib.
A few weeks ago he started rolling from back to front. He can't roll front to back quite yet. He has great neck/arm strength, he can get up into crawling position. (he's been close to rolling front to back but his arm gets caught)
Last night I put him in his crib on his back. He woke up, flipped to his tummy & went back to sleep. I let him sleep.
I always lay him on his back, if he flips - I don't even know it until the morning! Lately he likes sleeping on his side. Maybe he falls asleep trying to roll over.
I follow the rule to place them down on back, & let them sleep in any other position they can get to on there own. This has lead to DS sleeping with his butt in the air, and in various yoga positions lol!
Whever they get there themselves. Our problem is DS just started rolling and then gets stuck and wakes up and cries. Ugh! Past two nights have sucked. He is not quite 4 months yet, and I am not comfortable letting him cry by himself, plus I don't want him waking his brother. So I go in and rock him, then put him back in the crib on his back each time.

Kid 1 around 4 months. He would always flip himself over and we'd flip him back but it would wake him up. Our pediatrician said just leave him if he flips and stop swaddling. So we did.
Kid 2 when he flipped himself. Around same age as kid 1.
My second son preferred his tummy to his back. I always put him down on his back, but once he was able to flip to his tummy on his own, at 5 or 6 months, I let him stay there, though I always put him in his crib on his back. Once he hit around 13 months, when he fell asleep in my arms after rocking I starting putting him in on his tummy, as it limited the possibility of him waking up and me having to do another 30 minutes of rocking him.

As soon as he was able to roll there himself. Of course the first night I kept putting him back on his back and he would keep rolling to his belly. I finally just let him be. He's been sleeping on his belly ever since and his 15 months old now.

J started sleeping on his tummy around 4m when he could flip there himself. As confirmed by our pedi, once they can get there themselves, leave them be. We still put him down in his back, but he flips over within seconds.
I let her do it when she started rolling over, about 5 months. It got to a point where she would start rolling onto her belly as I was putting her in the crib. I decided I couldn't stand there 24/7 and watch her. She had great control of everything and always slept with her head turned. I mentioned it to her dr at her 6 mo appt and he said it was fine.
DD has been rolling both ways for about a month now, so we don't stop her anymore. She's sleeping in her crib and we always put her down on her back, but usually she'll make it to her tummy at some point. No use trying to stop her
Honestly, once we moved him to his crib at 3-4 months of age, he started rolling onto his tummy almost immediately. I was nervous about it for a few weeks and kept checking on him throughout the night. Once they decide to roll onto their tummies at night, there isn't much you can do to stop them!
