are gone. Before we got them, we patched up all of the possible holes for wild animals to get in, and we thought the coop was animal proof. A couple of nights ago, I stepped outside for a minute and could hear banging and the chickens going nuts. I yelled to scare whatever was after them and ran and got my H. We were too late.
Somehow a raccoon found a way in, and killed 13 chickens. One of the roosters and 2 laying hens managed to escape, but the rest of them are dead. I raised them from day olds, and spent hours making sure they were warm enough, had enough food, nursing sick ones back to health. They use to follow me, picking at my clothes and feet when I went to feed them. I realize most of them were being raised for food, it just makes me sad to think that they had to die that way
We're keeping the ones who lived in a pen in our garage, and rebuilding the coop from the ground up this weekend to make sure there are no holes. We're also putting in an electric fence around the pen, so that nothing can get near the coop. This just sucks
I know I was anti-killing-dogs-attacking-chickens, but this makes me so sad. 13?
Yep, 13. My H was raised a farm boy, and is usually pretty unaffected when it comes to this kind of thing. Even he said all he could see when he tried to sleep that night, was chickens scattered everywhere. It really bothered him too.

After several incidents with wild animals over the years, we had to bury the chicken wire/fencing to finally protect our chickens. We laid the wire down and then covered it with dirt to make almost a fence-floor, and make sure the sides were also buried a solid 8-12 inches. It was challenging to say the least, but it worked!
