DS is 6 1/2. His room has always been decorated with Safari animals. His crib bedding was Zanzibar from BRU - elephants, giraffes, etc.... we have photographs from our trip to Africa on his wall (above the dresser) and once he moved to a twin bed we got him an animal comforter.
But I'm thinking of redecorating his room but am not sure what to go with. I really want to do his room with maps and put huge world/USA maps on his walls on cork or foam board and let him pin the places we've been/want to go, etc... and I've picked up other maps from places we've gone. but I don't think that's "kid" enough.
He is huge into Legos and Starwars - not so much into dinosaurs or trains any more. Likes sports but is not intense about them to where I could see a sport theme room.
any thoughts - any rooms that you've loved? thanks!!

For the twins' room we used vintage racing posters (Le Mans, Monte Carlo, etc). We figured that would get them through the baby years and in to little boy stage at least.
They recently started asking for more posters to decorate their room but can't really articulate what they want. I do not want to take them somewhere and have them pick out babes in bikinis on a car or anything so I'm not sure how to approach that.
My son will be five next month. He has the Pottery Barn Kids madras plaid quilt on his bed, navy quilted shams, khaki walls, and navy curtains--all pretty neutral, non-themey stuff that I bought when we moved him out of the nursery with the intent of letting him select new accessories every couple of years to suit his interests.
Right now he is super into Star Wars and Legos, so he has the PBK "May the Force Be With You" throw pillow and the Target Star Wars sheets on his bed and the PBK vintage-style Star Wars comic book covers hanging over his bed (they are only $29 for the set and fit in standard frames, so pretty MM). We hung the Lego Star Wars planets (Naboo, Tattoine, and the Death Star--he already had these) from the ceiling. We bought one cute Star Wars poster on etsy (this one in an 11X14: www.etsy.com/listing/94428446/star-wars-r2d2-fan-art-print-8x10?ref=correlated_featured). He also has a couple wooden frames with 8x10 navy mats that were already in the room, so I popped a drawing he did of a light saber battle in one and "The Force is Strong With This One" printed on cardstock in a cool font in the other. It looks pretty cute and is definitely Star Wars without being too over the top or hard to undo down the line.
Before we converted to Star Wars a few weeks ago, his room was fire trucks/emergency vehicles, because that was his big thing when he was 3. He had the same quilt and curtains, but had a fire truck sham on his bed, a throw rug with emergency vehicles, and emergency vehicle pictures in the same frames that now house the Star Wars stuff.
The conversion from emergency vehicles to Star Wars cost around $150. When he is over Star Wars and really into something else in another year or two, we will change it again. I want my kids to have a say in their rooms and to be surrounded by stuff that makes them happy.

We also have a star wars themed room. I bought the bedding from target as I figured he might not use it long enough to make the PBK stuff worth it. We also have a Darth Vader print on the wall and various star wars figurines on DS's dresser.

go with a neutral color and then decorate with wall decals, etc - that way you can change it easily if his interests change. you can get wall decals for anything these days on etsy, etc.
we changed DS1's room to a "big boy room" when he turned 4 - and he wanted Batman - so we got the pottery barn collection- since the comforter is not batman, just blues, etc - the sheets are batman, and we got some wall decals, etc - he LOVES it- and we love that if he does decide he doesn't want it anymore- it's easy to change without having to paint again, etc (we painted the walls a nice, older boy blue).
but- i know my husbnad owuld want a batman room at 42yo if i let him- so i think DS1 will like it forever
