So I've decided that H and I are taking our nieces to Maui for 3 nights. We want to stay at a nice resort in Kaanapali. I've been looking at the Westin, Sheraton, and Hyatt. Here's what I've found:
OR...I can get what is most likely the Westin on Hotwire for $201/night. Of course, I might not get 2 doubles and may get a king + sofa bed, but I don't think the girls would mind.
However, I've been reading a lot of reviews on Tripadvisor and elsewhere saying that the Westin isn't great, rooms are terrible, etc. Is it really that bad? Would it be enough to turn down the Hotwire deal and spend more money on the Sheraton or Hyatt? Thoughts?
I just looked at a few and I think people are just being whiny. The pool is great, especially with kids, and the location is good, so I think you're still getting a good deal.
Your nieces live on Oahu right? Be sure to mention that. Neighbor island hotels like to take care of kama'aina.

The Westin Resort and Spa is AWESOME. We went there for our honeymoon and loved it. Great pool, right in front of the beach, next to Whaler's Village. The rooms were fine. The pool has a water slide and there is an adult pool with a bar.
I've never been to the Westin, but I take those reviews with a grain of salt. I think a lot of it has to do with your personality. DH and I are very low maintenence when it comes to hotels, so things that other people may find terrible, we'd be like "eh, no biggie."
For the most part, as long as it's clean, and the service is good, we don't get too excited about stuff not being perfect.
I think the Westin is great. We stayed there every year when I was growing up and went back recently just to walk around and see how it changed (we stayed at a neighboring timeshare). The location is perfect and the pool is great for kids.
I did want to throw out another option. With a group like yours, we like to rent timeshares instead of hotesl. Check out redweek.com to see if anything is available at the Marriott Ocean Club, which is located between the Hyatt and the Westin. There's also the Westin Villas, which are further down the beach and not as close to the main stretch of bars/restaurants in Kaanapali, but still beautiful. We've stayed at both and had wonderful stays both times.
Thank you all for your feedback...it makes me feel much better! H and I are pretty low-key travelers also, but I just wasn't sure with all the negative reviews.
