I like looking at Southern California and Manhattan because I think it would be great to live in beautiful weather or in an awesome city. It also makes me feel better about home prices here, when I look at LCOL places it makes me feel bad about what I could get as opposed to what I can get here.
I do this all the time, at least once a week. I can't wait to get out of this city. I usually limit to England and the Caribbean with Cottage Country thrown in there even though it's still in-province. My dream is to live 6 months in Cottage Country and 6 months in the Caribbean somewhere, with a house/condo in England to visit family.

Canadian version:
1) Ottawa 2) PEI (to live out my Anne of Green Gables fantasies) 3) Montreal
Those are really the only ones I look at. PEI is depressing because I can get a 5 bedroom, ocean view, acreage type property, heritage home for about 1/4 of what I paid for my 1 bedroom condo in Vancouver.
Whenever we vacation in the south, I look at real estate to see what our money would buy down there. For awhile I was looking at Houston because DH was in danger of being transferred there...We could live like ballers if we moved and that makes me sad. Here we live like paupers but I love my state and couldn't imagine living anywhere else.
I look locally for a weekend place on Whidbey Island and the coast but also Cannon Beach and the Oregon coast. So, Oregon is the main one. Also, Ohio so I can be sad over what I have here vs what I was able to afford back there (and how high we could live there on his salary here.) SoCal for the weather. Occasionally AZ and NV for snowbird homes. Florida for retirement as well (his mom is in Daytona and we're set to inherit half of their home but I'd rather retire on the Gulf Coast side.)

When I lived in DC I used to look at listings other places all the time because I was pretty sure I would never be able to afford to buy anything there. Now that we are out of there I don't do this much anymore, I just look in my neighborhood. Although I'm still pretty sure we will never be able to afford a house, haha.

Never. I'm already depressed knowing I'm probably going to be blowing $400k on a not-so-updated, 3 bedroom, 1300 square foot Cape. My parents beautiful 4 bedroom, brand new, on a 1/3 of an acre in North Carolina was like $180k.
I look back at my old neighborhood in Ohio out of curiosity. Every now and then (usually after a crappy day at work), DH looks at Florida. I also check my own neighborhood a lot.
