ok, so my cat has to back up all the way to the edge of the litter box and pee on the wall of the box. He can't just squat. Little booger. He's lucky I love him so much, LOL
We have a lidded box, but because the seam of the box doesn't seal, pee ends up all over the floor. It's so disgusting.
Every box I have found is designed so that the lid rests on the base, and any liquid that would hit the seam would be dumped on the floor. Help? Has anyone found a fix for this?
I don't use lidded boxes so can't help you with that type of box, but a couple of years ago one of my cats kept peeing over the edge of the box. I ended up buying a high wall/side litter box. Solved the problem.
Does your cat do this all the time? Wonder if maybe he does not like the litter you are using and doesn't want to squat in it.
We have a "high side" box. The problem is my boy is huge. 17 lbs and not overweight. He's tall, so the typical "tall" boxes are just not tall enough.
He doesn't do it all the time. It's like 1 out of every 3 uses. It probably wouldn't happen if we scooped 3x per day (he pees in a different spot each time he goes), but that's just not realistic.

Wow he is a big boy! Do you have room to set up a second litter box so he has more fresh litter available? I have two cats so know how hard it is to keep up with scooping the litter.

We scoop morning and night and do a complete litter swap out/box cleaning every 2 weeks. There is no where for a second box (3 people and a cat in 1,000 sq. ft). He's not peeing outside of the box. It's just the stinking box design that allows litter to leak out from the inside.

I have this same problem. We use a lidded box. I also get a giant size litter liner. The liner is bigger than the litter box. So I place the lid over it, and then turn up the sides of the liner. I hope that make sense, because I don't know how else to describe it. The liner catches the pee. Then when you clean it out, you remove the lid, and the pee drains back into the box.
I use a storage bin with a hole cut in the top. My cats did the same thing and this fixed our issue. Of course with this you cant use linings, but I just clean it out with the hose and soap when it gets gross.
This is the type of box I use. We just cut a hole big enough for the cats to get in and out in the lid. As long as its got clean litter, they don't care what type of box they potty in. Attachment Deleted

When we had a cat, I used a storage container w/out the lid. My girl wouldn't use a lidded box. However, since yours will- I'd do what the pps suggest.

My cat refuses to squat, so we're using a storage container without a lid. We actually cut one side down just a tiny bit shorter and DH built a step that goes on the outside to make it a bit easier for them to get in. Our boys are spoiled.
ETA: Also, I thought I had clicked on MM, and was surprised that all of the posts were about pets this morning. LOL

We had the same problem with our one cat going over the side of even the tallest box being sold. I had trash bags lining the wall and a plastic mat under the boxes with a line of litter at the bottom of wall.
Now we make our own boxes. Just take a plastic tote and cut a u-shape hole. Make sure the box is taller than your cat standing tall lol. Only one store in my city sells the tall boxes of the size I like. Ditch the lid.
All boxes sold in stores are too small for most cats. No idea why they don't make them larger.
