I'm another one with fine hair, but a lot of it. I have zero love for my hair. It has just enough wave to be annoying in the rain/humidity, but not enough to look good at all. I want to try not washing, but I swim 3-4 days a week, and ride at least 3, so between chlorine and helmet-sweat head...no.
I did find that switching to sulfate-free shampoo made a huge difference in how healthy my hair is. I switched to Trader Joe's brand (cheap!), and my stylist has commented several times on how much healthier my hair has gotten. I also bought a quality hair dryer around the time I switched, and I think those two things really helped.
I blow dry, and that's about it. If the wave is really out of control, I'll use a straightener. I feel like I should put more effort in to my hair, but I haven't ever found a cut that I love that makes me want to put a ton of effort in to it.
Have any curly/wavy people tried Miss Jesse products? I really want to try the pillow soft stuff.
A friend of mine uses it and really likes it. I don't because it doesn't seem like it's enough for my hair since it's so thick. Although, I do have a sample around here somewhere that I think I can try it out and report back.
I don't like my hair with no shampoo. The cowash leaves my hair tangled and dry feeling and I don't get the return of my curl pattern. So I am still a slave to my tresemme
This is me too. I found that co-washing was fine for me when I had far less hair. Now, I have to shampoo and use conditioner.

I have very fine but thick dark blonde hair that is extremely straight. I had a perm fall out in 2 to 3 weeks when I was a teen. It does not hold a curl unless I dry and cold curl it (aka roll up dry hair the night before and sleep on it). Then the curl will stay until afternoon or so if I spray it with a bit of hairspray.
I cut my hair into a pixie about 4 months ago though so no longer an issue. Before that I had an inverted shoulder-length bob and my routine was very very different. I have always used a sulfate-free shampoo as my hair reacts very badly to sulfates. I can't explain it but it looks like I never wash my hair and the oil just keeps building. It's very weird. Anyway I am totally down on sulfate-frees. I also prefer to use silicon-free if I can (Trader Joe's for the win!) as I have less build-up issues without it and can go for much longer between actual washes. My hair is much healthier for it too.
When I had the bob I would straighten it and just let it be only washing every 3 days or so. It was perfectly fine but now with the pixie I have way too much product build up and frankly B&B's Sumotech doesn't look good after 2 days, I don't care what anyone is trying to tell you. I do shower at night (I prefer going to bed clean) but I just spray the crap out of it with water in a plant spray bottle in the morning and act like I just got out of the shower with only slightly damp hair. It styles fine and easily with minimal dry time. I did the same with my bob too.
With the pixie I have found I am using more hair products than normal, something I have to get used to. I use the previously mentioned Sumotech mostly. It's like the perfect blend of paste, goop and wax and I can usually get my hair to agree to the fake faux-hawk I got going on (aka I have a rooster comb on the top of my head not a true faux-hawk, looser and more relaxed). It works.

I have a ton of thick wavy hair, prone to frizz. I always have to have it thinned out at every haircut. I have never really embraced my waves as they're not pretty (well back in the 80's it was all big and frizz and I fit right in, ). A couple of weeks ago I tried because it was too hot and humid to style and my 3yr old DS looked at me and said "mommy why is your hair all messy". Nice, LOL.
I'm down to washing every three days. If I have somewhere fancy to go I will wash it, even if it's supposed to be a no wash day. I also color my hair really dark in the winter (almost black with undertones of purple). In the summer I highlight and low light with my natural light brown hair.
On days I wash, I straighten my hair as well as either curl or flat iron to get out the frizz. I use a Biolage shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair. No4 prep and prime, then Pureology straitening cream.
Day 2 I usually just pull my (long) bangs back in a clip and Day 3 it's up in a pony-tail.
We're going to Disneyworld in September and I'm thinking it's still going to be hot and humid, so I might have to try to embrace the waves.
Do any of the low/no shampoo ladies have dandruff?
I do, but to combat it, I try to shampoo my hair every week. It's really the only way I can avoid it. I can't go longer than 8 days between shampoos.
Back on the Miss Jessies. It's ok, the definition is fine. Here's the photo of my curls with only The Miss Jessie's products. I used the Curly Butter Creme and the Curling Jelly. I used a spritz bottle to dampen my hair and then twisted it last night. It's not bad at all; it's just the smell I dislike. Shea Moisture smells better.
Here are my curls - I have several different curl patterns going on my head. *shakes head*

The pillow curl stuff intrigues me since I now shower and workout completely at night M - F, to wake up and not have to stick my head in the shower would be fantastic. However, their customer service rep still hasn't gotten back to me about alternative shipping charges. They wanted to try and charge me $8.00 to ship my $2.00 trail size. Ummmm no thank you, I'll just keep sticking my head in the shower.
ETA: Oh and fragrance is no bueno, most fragrances will make my eyes feel like the Sahara Desert and my sinuses go haywire.
I'm currently using a product that my mom bought for ToddlerB. It is called Komaza Care Califia Moisturizing creme. I love it, and it smells soooo good. Like a light vanilla cupcake with a sliiiiiight touch of lemon. I sniff her head all day.
Anyway, the Taaliah Waajid products have also worked well for her, I need to get more. I have so much shit over here, I have vowed to use it all before buying more.
Thank you.
I've slowed down on buying stuff, as I've realized I've been having reactions to some stuff.
I really like Oyin Handmade stuff. I've been using it for awhile, and they just recently started in Target. I love the pomade, and the juice and berries (had to stop due to a reaction)

My hair just became wavy/curly in the last 5 years. I hate it.
That said, when I do wear it curly, I use the bumble and bumble curl defining cream, and it seems to work well.
When I wear it straight, I use the l'anza healing smooth straightening balm. This stuff is amazing. It was a rec from my stylist, and it really lives up.
I really like the big sexy hair dry shampoo and weather proofing sprays I have gotten in my ipsy bags. I ended up buying full size of both.
I have curly/frizzy hair. I blow dry and then iron or curl. I laso have hidden highlights and dye my hair because I'm half grey now. I get a keratin treatment and that has improved the amount of time I spend blow drying. These are the products I use: Shampoo: Loreal no-sulfate Conditioner: Loreal no Sulfate Mascara: Kerastase Masque Chroma Captive (once per week) Leave in treatment: Kerastase Fiber architech When curling or using the flat iron: Garnier flat iron perfector

If you are having reactions to it, I better leave it alone. Also, don't buy the Black Label Shea Moisture stuff. It caused reactions too.

Thanks for the tip.
If was really weird, as I've used it more frequently in the past and when I started using it again.
I'm just grateful the pomade doesn't bother me. It gets my curls poppin

Anybody color their hair at home? Any suggestions?
A new hairdresser turned my hair too blonde/red last time and still charged me $150 after I told her I didn't like it and she acknowledged that she "didn't know my hair and it really did react very red." I've been out of town for weeks for work, so I can't get into a new place this week as I had hoped. I just need one of those 6-week dyes to make the roots look less obvious.

and she didn't fix it? Whoa, that's one bad hair stylist.

Yeah, she said, "Well, it's the first time with your hair and we'll get it better next time." I'm not rude, but I did tell her, that it wasn't brown low/high lights like I asked and instead was blonde highlights with a red undertone since she tried to add an all-over cover to mute it (which I think is what left it red). Two of my friends have good hair color from her and my mom had bought me a $100 gift certificate/credit. It still cost my $50 after that (and tip, which was 5%, b/c I couldn't bring myself to no tip). So I decided there wouldn't be a next time and didn't fight about $$ since I'm just not going back.
Anyway, now I have blonde highlights growing out and want to minimize those before a wedding this weekend, but was too late to get into another recommended place.
Do any of the low/no shampoo ladies have dandruff?
I do, but I think part of my "dandruff" is residue from my dry shampoo and is pregnancy related, bc I haven't had dandruff in years and now I have it again. I also take hot showers which I think contributes to my dry scalp. I use a redken anti-dandruff shampoo and it seems to work pretty well.
As for me - I have super fine, dead straight hair. Most of the suggestions to give it more body (like layers) just don't work bc my hair just hangs. I've finally accepted that the trick for me to having nice hair is regular hair cuts. My hair just can't hide the dead ends like I thought it could. Sometimes I would go 6 months between cuts, lol. Now I'm going every 8 to 10 weeks and it makes a HUGE difference. It helps that my stylist is cheap lol.
I wash my hair every other day, sometimes longer in between (I washed my hair Friday and just washed it again today, then I'll wash it Wednesday). I use Redken's anti-dandruff shampoo and some random cheap conditioner, and I use Bumble's Thickening Spray before I blow it dry.
I know I need to upgrade my conditioner but the options make me nervous, lol. There are so many choices!! I really like Bumble and Bumble so would prefer to stick to that for conditioner.
Has anyone used B&B's "city shine" finishing spray or whatever? I wonder if it will make my hair look more interesting. I'm on a never ending quest despite what I said above ;-)
I think that's probably the crux of it regardless of hair type. Drop the heat, stop futzing with it, and learn to embrace and work with your natural texture.
Natural hair ain't just for people of color lol.
My hair changed with this last pregnancy and its now wavy bordering on curly. I have no idea what to do with it anymore.
This happened to me too! I used to be able to skip days washing, and skip the heat. Now it's just crazy and sticks out at weird angles, and is insanely frizzy.
I just recently bought a flat iron, and I feel like I can't leave the house without using it. I try not to blow dry when I can, and I use heat protector spray.

I'll have to try redken. My dandruff actually went away while ku and then came back with a vengeance and is just now getting back to normal annoying but manageable levels.

I currently use pureology hydrate shampoo and conditioner every other day and Ouidad climate control gel to give my madness some sort of control. I picked up some itty bitty pureology red shampoo/conditioner to try out, I've been using them instead of my hydrate line once a week or so. I really like the hydrate line. My mom's been trying to convince me to go the baking soda/vinegar routine for a few years now. Sorry, I'm a slave to my products. Actually I tell her she's been working at her hippy college way too long.

I have, a few times. I'm to lazy to keep up with it. I like Feria, and Garnier Nutrisse dyes.
I didn't read all of the thread yet, but I'll just go ahead and post what I use before its too late, haha.
For reference, I have a lot of fine color treated (allover demi-permanent color, two bleached out under sections which are then dyed, usually Special Effects blue haired freak or Manic Panic shocking blue). My hair is also naturally curly/wavy, with uneven curl pattern. Some sections are kinky and get easily frizzy while others are much more fine.
"regular" shampoo (used rarely, maybe once every two months or so?): Fekkai Shea Butter Shampoo "regular" conditioner (used with shampoo): Fekkai Shea Butter Conditioner Deep Conditioner: Fekkai Shea butter moisture masque, Garnier 3 minute mask or Hask Henna 'n' placenta
Cleanser (used every 3 days or so): Hair One Cleansing Conditioner with Jojoba Oil or DevaCurl no poo. I find the DevaCurl no poo to be more drying/color stripping than the Hair One. I wanna try DevaCare (for color-treated hair) next to see how it compares.
For straightening: After shower, wrap hair in microfiber hair towel whilst getting dressed and doing makeup then... Fekkai Glossing Cream or Alterna Bamboo Brilliance cream (they are very similar, IMO) Moroccan Oil or Josie Maran Argan oil hair serum Dry straight using Aveda paddle brush and Hot Tools ionic hair dryer finish with either big ass (2") Hot Tools curling iron or Sedu straightener Set style with Oribe Anti-Humidity Spray (its amazing and way too expensive but damn does it work!)
For wearing curly: After shower, wrap hair in microfiber hair towel while drying off body. Then, unwrap towel, flip head forward, and apply Garnier curl cream, which I mix in my hand with Ouidad climate control gel. On kinkier parts (back of crown), I'll throw in a tiny bit of Tigi Bed Head. I use this combo all over, making sure to comb it through evenly with my fingers and scrunch. Then I'll use some Garnier curl construct mousse targeted toward my roots and working it in and through my hair while scrunching. I'll spritz the ends with some wave spray, targeting the less curly areas, and then "plop" my hair on my head, but instead of using a towel or cloth, I just put on a cheapie shower cap to keep my hair outta my face and to let the product "work" in my hair while I dress and makeup.
Once ready to dry, I remove shower cap, flip head forward again, spritz any necessary areas with water or curl spray, and use diffuser while scrunching to dry it almost dry. When almost dry, I flip head back upright and diffuse the rest while sorta shaping the style. Spray and fix any necessary spots.
Natural Peeps, what do you use in your hair to keep the ends from tangling. I combed out my hair for about an hour and a half this morning, trimmed it, and put it into to low buns. Three hours later, the ends were back to being tangled. So, I spent another hour combing it out, spraying it Josie Maran Bohemian Argan Mist (my hair responds well to her Argan Oil, so I thought I'd give the mist a try), and twisting it up. I can't spend 2.5 hours combing out my hair on the regular. HALP!

When you say tangeled ends, what exactly do you mean? If I bunch my wet hair into a bun and it dries, it's going to kind of clump together and tangle in sections. Also, this happens in my wash and go puffs. Although, You can only tell if you try to seperate the curls once dry so I never do that.
I use cantu Shea moisture products and ORS lock and twist gel for braid/twist outs (recommended by @nitax years ago). That combination keeps me tangle free after it dries.
