I usually wear Nars Orgasm but the color is so forgiving that it seems to generally look good. I've started branching out and recently got a new blush that is much brighter. I look like a clown after I've applied it. It looked good in the store when the sephora guy tested it on me.
Do you watch some YouTube tutorials to learn how to apply blush?
You can. There are a lot out there, one below. Look for someone with your face type. You might just be using too much or you might need a better brush. What blush did you get?

I'm convinced anyone can wear almost any blush color if they learn to apply with a gentle touch. All of my favorites are bright, old lady pinks that could easily cross over into clown territory if I wasn't careful. You probably just need to modify your technique with the new color.
do you wear powder as well? I will sometimes use a large kabuki brush ( I love the Sonia Kashuk one from Target) and I will blend a little powder over it to make it look more natural if I apply too much.

The real techniques blush brush
I don't use that one but have been told it's a good one.
The best I can recommend is to use a very light touch and slowly build up. I swirl my blush brush in light circles, starting on the apples of my cheeks and working my way back and up toward my hairline. I have found that using a bit of bronzer to contour my cheekbones first helps to tame blush color because it gets mixed in as I do my circles and tamps down the brightness. I also have a giant buffing brush that I use when my color is too much; that helps to sweep everything out and mellow the brightness.
One thing I've noticed is that when I use blush of any but the very brightest color, it initially looks as though little to nothing is on my skin. I have to do something else for a few moments and let it brighten up on its own. This sounds completely weird and I don't know if body heat has something to do with making the color appear on my skin, but I've learned the hard way that when I try to build up the color all at once, it always winds up being too much.* If you haven't already, you might want to try taking several light passes with your blush, but spread the passes out.
*I've actually found that letting each step of my makeup settle for a moment always gives me better results. It lets creams set and colors appear.
