I think we're going to offer solids this weekend
I'm excited/nervous/happy/sad....
Any tips?
And did you offer 1 food at a time for X days or did you offer a few options? (BLW book says a few things at once should be fine unless you have a family history of food allergies.)
Start with something that's easy to hold- sweet potato fries, broccoli, etc. Things like avocado and banana are slippery and pretty challenging. Do it when he's in a good mood. Watch a YouTube video on saving a choking infant before you start (made me a little less nervous knowing what to do if she choked, which she never did.)
I never bothered waiting to see if there were any allergies.
Starting solids was sort of anti-climactic for us. DS is not an eater. It took weeks to eat anything, really, and he still doesn't eat much. It did make it easier for me to eat my meals, though, so that part was nice.

This is my first post (hooray!). It was pretty anticlimactic for us. DD took quite some time to get into it. We started right around the same time as you as well. Her first food was small avocado cubes. The video was priceless as she didn't like the taste much. We ended up mashing it, mixing it with breast milk, and feeding it to her on a spoon. She ate about 2 bites and we were done. We continued to offer her small pieces of food and in about a month she would eat small cubes of fruit or puffs, which was wonderful for going to a restaurant. We stuck with the same food for 3-4 days for the first few foods and slowly shortened the length in between new foods. Good luck!

Have you read the BLW book? I would check it out if you have not read it.
Make sure LO is sitting up right. Let him pick up the food, do not put food into his mouth for him (this is a choking hazard). So you will want to start with large pieces of food. Something easy for him to pick up. Stick/finger shaped is best. He mostly will not eat much at first, and that is okay.
Gagging is totally normal.
I think at the very beginning we stuck with one food per day. We did not wait three days though. Not sure when we stopped this, but eventually we did not really worry about it.
We've been doing purees for a month and a half or so. DS loves solids. I started out waiting about 5-6 days between new foods, but he hasn't had a reaction to anything so now I'm not as cautious about it (wait a couple days vs 5). He's had rice cereal, oatmeal, avocado, carrots, bananas, applesauce, sweet potato and watermelon so far.
