I read somewhere that they went to a private, locked board for reasons that I don't really understand.
They jumped a few weeks before everything happened, because TN was going to their posts and pinning their pics on pinterest like they belonged to TN. It's in the Nest's ToU/EULA that doing so is legit, like it is in every ToU/EULA ever, but entities only very, very rarely act on it. And that was pretty much the Nest's response... it's in the ToU, so we'll do what we want and you'll like it. So WC's said fuck you then, and moved to a locked forum so they couldn't pull that shit.
Not quite accurate. They got an apology, and TN said they weren't going to pull content and pin it anymore without the consent of the person they were pinning the content from.

There is also a mandatory minimum for posting or you'll be deleted from the board.
Everybody bitches and moans about this "minimum post mandate" -- it's one whole post for month, FFS.
The regs from WC were tired of being the only ones to created content on the board. Lurkers basically used the WC board as their own personal recipe search. They wanted others to contribute, too.
There was also a very vocal population, particularly on ML, that openly mocked the WC bloggers. None of us claim to be professionals, most of us started blogs to simply share what we cooked/baked and enjoyed.

Isn't that what most people wanted, especially to drive traffic to their blogs? Now they no longer have an open audience to drive blog traffic. It's a bit like cutting off your nose to spite your face.
Most people use this board as their news access, and to provide them with discussion points. ZOMG, lurkers, we must ban them all.

Most of them don't get the majority of their blog traffic from The Nest. They have their blogs featured on food sites like Foodbuzz or BlogHer. They get photos featured on TasteSpotting or FoodGawker. They have Facebook and Twitter accounts that draw in traffic. Their photos get pinned on Pinterest or "stumbled" on StumbleUpon.
People think bloggers make so much money from hits. Personally, you'd have to visit my blog daily for YEARS for me to make $2.00. It's really not that much. Most only make enough money to pay to have the blog self-hosted.
Oh well -- I will miss the daily blog update post. It's too bad they don't want to share anymore.
Heh. The last time I was on WC was a couple years ago when I got fed up with 18 posts a day about "BU! I made brownies!" or "BU! I made a Pioneer Woman recipe!" so its nice to hear it's been consolidated into one post at least.

1. I think it is patently unfair to blame people for using the WC board as their own personal recipe search when pretty much every freaking request for anything was met with nothing but blog links, hello?
2. You make it sound like there was a long history of bullying mocking of WC, yeah, no.
God, why do you have to speak for everyone when you don't know everyone's real reasons for leaving?

I'm just re-stating what two other WC ProBoarders posted on an MM thread.
I am kinda LMAO that there is so much passionate hatred for the WC board. Sucks that they are not going to post here, since there were lots of good ideas (at least IMO), but if they feel more comfortable on a private board, that is fine too.

I really LIKED the WC board, and a lot of the posters on it, I am SAD that they decided to bail and make a private board and I wish that the Pinterest fallout had happened in sync with the jump to Proboards so that they'd be here.
This does not mean that I don't think it's laughable to be pissed off about people using your recipe board to find recipes OR that I wonder if Annie's Eats (who I do admire) is on methamphetamines most of the time and if not then whatthefuckandhow?

And never specific recipes. "Check out the dinner tag on my blog!" Um, thanks for all the help.

This is exactly why I just stopped visiting that board. I was OK with them posting links to specific recipes sometimes, but the "I have a tab for whatever on my blog" was obnoxious and didn't answer the OP 99% of the time.
I honestly didn't even know that food blogs existed before The Nest. Someone (kelbrian, I think) posted a link for Annie's blog on PC&E and I found a few good recipes. And, yeah, I agree Annie's either on speed or has a ghostbaker. The bloggers on What's Cooking got plenty of traffic from me....until I discovered Food Gawker, etc. and realized there were better - and healthier - blogs out there. I still visit a few now and then, though.
