On a beach, preferably Turks & Caicos. Or St. Lucia as I've never been there before. Otherwise, I'd be too chicken to travel alone to either South America or Africa.
I would try Finland or Iceland. The Northern Lights are supposed to be at their most spectacular in December/January. Can you imagine watching that on NYE? Amazing.

I hadn't thought of Iceland, but man, that sounds amazing.
My brother did NYE there and said it was a blast. Lots of young people.
I like the ocean hut in Bali idea a lot, and watching the aurora borealis in a remote cottage in Iceland is a very close second. That Iceland would be way more affordable might bump it to the top. You could lounge about in the geothermal spas too--Blue Lagoon!
Sprawled on a beach in Oahu. I know Honolulu/Waikiki is very touristy and many people don't like that about it, but I loved being on the beach at night with all of the glittering hotel/business lights and Diamond Head in the background. Sigh.

I am checking out all of the amazing tours in Iceland right now. Glacier hiking? That could be an amazing trip!
H and I have almost pulled the trigger on Iceland twice now. I think once we have the dough to take Andy on a bigger trip, we will go there. Airbnb has so many adorable little austere cottages perched in the most gorgeous rural spots for out of the city trips to see the lights and national parks.
oh but keep in mind that Iceland or other Nordic countries would boast a very loooong eve on NYE: only about 4 hours of daylight in Iceland's late December.

This is also on my list of to-dos...what better way to bring in the new year than with natures firework show? The secret life of Walter Mitty pushed Iceland above the trans-Siberian railway for "cold weather" vacations.
