I think this varies for everyone. I went off the pill in July 2011 and got pregnant in November 2011. I don't think I had a normal cycle that entire time and I only know for sure that I ovulated in the last cycle (I started using OPKs the last cycle, I wasn't tracking ovulation before that).

Only way to know is by charting, and OPKs can help. Buy a bunch of cheapos OPK's and start testing pretty early as you have no idea how your cycle will be. (If you charted before starting the pill, start testing 2 or 3 days before your previous fairly regular o-day to be on the safe side.) Charting is the only way you can predict AND confirm.

Thank you for your responses! I have another question...
I have been temping this week and every morning I take my temp 3 times and get different readings (using going from high to low). Weds was around 97.2, yesterday started at 97.4 and went down to 92.2, today started at 97.7 and went down to 97.4. Should I be taking the first reading? Why do they gradually go down with each one? It's only a 9 sec digital thermometer (switching to a BBT next cycle!).
I'm also checking my CM and cervix position...got EWCM starting on Weds and the cervix has been high since then.
I made a mistake in checking my OPK in that I was only testing 1x per day and with FMU...also didn't start until Weds...so I think that if I ovulated, it might have been yesterday???
I'm confused...any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks and good luck to all that are TTC!!!
I only take my temp once a day, and use that. Temp fluctuations are totally normal, and I also only used OPKs once a day, in the afternoon, until I figured it was around the time I ovulated.

How/when do you take your temp, what do you do in between taking temps? You're supposed to take your temp immediately upon waking without having done anything yet, not even go to the bathroom or step out of bed or anything. (Also, about the same time every day!)
If you do that 3 times in a row and it gives you such different readings, your thermometer is probably just very inaccurate.
Also, some books/people suggest that if you get inconsistent readings, you should take your temps vaginally. But never change within a cycle.
You might've ovulated, you might not have. Just keep on having sex and if your period comes, just try again next month :-)
