I'm in Australia, not the UK. But candy wise Reese's Pieces, Sweetarts, Mike & Ike, Valomilk (if you can find them), Junior Mints, Butterfingers or Peanut Butter Bars and Atomic Fireballs are very American. I really haven't seen similar products in other countries.
Is it okay with the parents if you bring them sweets? If so, I would recommend Reeses, Pop Tarts, Froot Loops (can't get those here!), stuff like that. Unless it's some kind of "novelty" chocolate like Reeses, then don't bother as American chocolate (like Hersheys Kisses) is truly horrible compared to the chocolate over here, and most Brits wouldn't like it.
And I agree - the peanut butter / chocolate thing hasn't seemed to make it over here and it's delicious and should be shared :-)
This. Peanut butter + Chocolate. Very American. Peanut butter M&Ms are another one that I tend to bring back.
Are there any regional foods where you live? That's another thing that tends to be harder to find, and that I tend to lug home with me.
<-- Extremely American. Though I'm not sure how excited a kid would be to get them!
I like the idea of a something from the local sports team. Or for the girl, maybe a piece of jewelry with a subtle regional connection. Our town had an exchange program with a small town in Japan that was known for producing amber, and one of our exchange students gave me a small piece of local amber jewelry when I was that age, and I still have it.

We are in Texas so I would say salsa or BBQ sauce.
A few different unusual salsa varieties could be fun!
