I was just playing with browsing the boards on my new app and found this board and thought I'd say hi!
I just moved from NY to Iceland. We have been here for 3 weeks and currently living with the ILs. My DH is originally from Iceland and we moved to be closer to family and for school for our LOs. We have 2 munchkins, Mel who is 2 years old and Thorinn (Þórinn in Icelandic) who is 3 months. I'm currently a SAHM but am hoping to start at university next year for my MA.
I'm going to browse a bit and try to stick around, but wanted to introduce myself before posting things!
Hello orriskitten ! Welcome I'm an American living in Paris with my French hubby and franco-american LO (3 mos). How are you liking Iceland? How is the adjustment going living with the ILs?
Hiya! I'm an American living in South Africa with my Italian H and our 10.5 month old son. I've always wanted to see Iceland, sounds like such a beautiful place.

I love Iceland. I've lived here briefly in the past and from the first time I visited I said it was one of the places that felt like it could be home, not just a place to visit.
Living with the ILs is really nice. We moved to get help from family and to be closer to them. My family in the states are unable and unwilling to help with. The kids. My ILs want their grandchildren close and want to be active in their lives. I got lucky with amazing ILs.
Which is good since we may possibly have to stay with them for 5-6 months.
Hi there! It's always great to see other Nordic posters!
I'm an American living in Oslo, and I have a Brazilian boyfriend who lives in Stavanger.
In which part of Iceland do you live? (Statistically, I'd guess greater Reykjavík, but I have a good friend here who's originally from Akureyri.)
Re: ex-pat communities, InterNations is fairly global, but the vibe of their meet-ups definitely varies by location. The one here is not my cup of tea. From my experiences, a lot of the active ex-pat groups tends to be organized locally, though these days a lot can be found through Facebook or Meetup.

We are in a "suburb" of Reykjavik called Kopavogur (please forgive my lack of accent marks, I'm still learning where they all go lol). DH's family is originally from the Westfjords, northwest Iceland, and we go up there to visit a bunch. I have yet to visit Akureyri, but my ILs met while in boarding school there so I imagine it'll be a fun and special trip A few of our good friends from Iceland recently moved to Oslo.
I just signed up for InterNations. They seem to have monthly gtgs but they happen at bed time and we're still working with our DD to get past some adjustment/sleep issues. Hoping next month we can check one out.
I forgot about Meetup! Need to look into that and do a search on FB. Thanks for the advice
You poor dear - the Icelandic language terrifies me!
InterNations is good, though if you're not a paying member here they've started charging you to attend the events (which includes 1 free drink).
I'm American with a Norwegian SO living in Brisbane, Australia. Damn, there's a lot of us Down Under here, isn't there? Welcome!
InterNations varies by event and location. In Oslo non-Albatross have had to pay to attend the official InterNations events for years, and no drinks are included. However, they also have member-organized activities listed that are free (you just pay the normal admission, rental fees, or whatever).

Hi and welcome! I'm an American and I'm back in the States now. I've lived in England and spent a lot of time in Belgium and in Eastern Europe. Nice to see you on here. Iceland sounds very fascinating.
I'm an American in Hong Kong, but my dad is actually an Icelander and I have a lot of family there. My sister and her family actually live in Kopavogur. If you haven't eaten at Saffran yet you should, it's really good.
That's awesome that you guys moved to Iceland! Your kids will appreciate being able to speak the language so much. My dad pretty much refused to teach me and my younger sister (not the one in Kopavogur) and I'm really sad about it. He also never did anything about registering my birth an I missed my opportunity for dual citizenship

Welcome! I'm an American and we've been back in the States for just under 2 months now. DH and I lived in Munich for 15 months and we had our DD there. She's now almost 14 months old. Living abroad again is not out of the question for us so I'll be sticking around.
