im having a hard time figuring out what to get my son for his birthday. he isn't into a lot of the popular stuff for this age group. he's not into pirate, lego's, superheros etc. he more into animals. but a lot of animal "toys" are for younger kids. he already has some of those basic type toys, like trains sets, lincoln logs. I'm stumped!

Does he like puzzles? DS1 loves the big Melissa and Doug floor puzzles (with about 50 pieces)- the US and world puzzles are favorites, but they have animal ones
My son turned four in May. He got a bike from us. Other things he liked were a toy guitar (it's leapfrog), a big truck, and a fire station sign. Does your kid have outside toys? The lawnmower is a big hit with both DS and DD. A wagon? A soccer goal or basketball net. DS also has a really neat set of toys that he can build things like a crane, a fork truck. I'm sorry that I can't find it online right now. He also really likes magformers, but they are super expensive.
My son is really into games right now. Don't Wake Daddy, , Don't Break the Ice, Pop the Pig, etc. Is he into outdoor things at all? A pop up tent or fishing pole/kit could be fun.

My daughter, who is 4.5 still plays with her plastic Schleich animals daily. They are really realistic looking, so not babyish. Playmobil also has sets with animals that he might like.
Also, age 4 is around when my kids started really using magnatiles to build specific things to incorporate into their play (a barn for animals, a house or apartment building for people, a garage for cars, etc.). This may be a way for him to add another dimension to his animal play.
DS2 recently got a bug cage and a butterfly garden (you grow the butterflies from caterpillars and then release them) for his 4th birthday.
I have a boy who is super hard to shop for and not into traditional "boy" stuff either.
Butterfly garden set, ant farm, ladybug set, net and critter cage for catching bugs. The Backyard Safari brand has some nature "gear."
Does Wild Kratt have toys yet?
My friend got my DS a talking microscope that is great for younger kids. It is called the "Geosafari Talking Microscope"
Playmobil has some great animal sets for older kids. I love Playmobil. But if you want something a little more cost effective then TRU carries the Animal Planet brand and they have tons of different sets too.
Crafts that involve animals...bird house kit, I've seen sets where you can make animal "prints" in plaster...
Otherwise outdoor stuff is a hit here...stomp rockets, they have those "flingers" that let you fling rockets in the air also, water balloons, any type of water shooter
