Sonrisa- My church backs Gay Marriage. I go to a predominately Black Church. Our Pastor said" I don't know how anyone of African descent could disagree with this which is a Civil Rights issue. " I stood and applauded so hard my hands hurt, some folks were not clapping though.

Ha!!! Our sermon was titled " Stand your Ground" all about women in the bible and history who have done so. The Gay Marriage talk happened right at the end before final hymn.

Is it true that Obama recently called on black pastors to speak to their congregations about gay marriage? I skimmed that headline somewhere last week but didn't click on the link because my eyes hurt from rolling so hard.
I really wanted to be all, bitch, what the fuck have you done for the black community lately that you now want something from us in return?
So I saved my blood pressure and didn't investigate further.
No, our sermon was all about God's love and the Apostles Creed because we had confirmation.
We have had - and currently have - gay members, and I know our clergy support gay marriage. I don't even know that it would get mentioned in our church because I'm pretty sure most everybody already supports it. It's sort of a non-issue for us.
My church supports gay marriage, and someone in the congregation brought it up as a celebration during Prayers and Concerns, but the minister didn't preach on it. He tends to steer away from the political, which I like a lot. I used to belong to a very politically active lefty church and I wasn't fond of that...

We intentionally chose a church that supports gay marriage so I suspect that if it was brought up at all it was under positive term. I did not attend on Sunday to hear it, though, bc Mother's Day is a loathsome day for IF folks.

If I ever move to the ATL, I will be attending your church.
It was not discussed at my church. In fact, I don't think my Pastor will touch it. I do know that he is very much Pro-Choice and considering that his best friend who also happens to be our Minister of Music is gay, I seriously doubt that he comes out against Gay Marriage.
I also don't expect him to lend any support because the church is still kinda recovering from his divorce two years ago. We lost several members due to his divorce (which he acknowledged and knew would happen), so I don't know if adding this to the issue would be what he wants.
We have that I know of at least one lesbian couple and a handful or so of gay men.

This is something I love to see. I do know the news around here (bmore) has been speaking a lot to this being a Civil Rights issue (though one of our talk radio hosts, from a prominent CR family, says it is not. I don't know why and it bugs me). Mine did not and I am surprised, but glad.

I have been out of it so I don't know if that's true. My minister said he was getting calls all week about it. Also I belong to a UCC and since Obama attended one he may have felt more compelled than others. I think UCC's in general may be saying something about the issue since they have supported Gay Marriage for about 7 years or so.
"This prick is asking for someone here to bring him to task Somebody give me some dirt on this vacuous mass so we can at last unmask him I'll pull the trigger on it, someone load the gun and cock it While we were all watching, he got Washington in his pocket."

FWIW - if anyone is looking for a church that is supportive of social issues such as these, I stumbled on this website and it's where we found our church. I am not sure of how accurate it is for all areas, but it might be a start for those who need a new church.
When Tom Joyner said " How can ministers be against Gay Marriage?? Who do they think sings in the choir???" I died.....
There was a scandal at my home (PCUSA) church about this.
It's Ft Laud so fairly gay friendly, even if the church is neutral.
This guy in the choir has been there for decades, and his mom has been a member since something like the 18th century (she's old!). The guy gets nominated to be an elder.
Oops, the guy is gay, and some people raise a fuss, b/c an elder is an ordained position. It turned out that my dad took the guy's place, but I was initially afraid he was part of the original elder class that led the charge. It sort of shook the church up since this was a long standing member, very active, and most people didn't even know his sexuality. He and his mom, plus a number of supporters, left. Nevermind that the choir director is asexual at best, but most likely gay.

I read an article how he did reach out to several religious leaders, black and white, after his announcement to discuss his position. It was unclear in the article that he asked, though he might have.
I didn't go, but I doubt my church did since it was mother's day. It almost never discusses politics. (Current events yes, but I doubt Obama/his stance would be mentioned specifically)

i wasn't there... but have never heard anything political like that discussed during a sermon. our church has never assumed that just b/c you belong to that church you vote one way or another. My church does not discuss things like gay marriage and abortion, etc - at least I've never heard it discussed. If it was- i don't think I could belong.... b/c likely I would not feel the same on those issues as the pastor.
