I've heard/read from several sources (books, websites, IRL people) that you shouldn't sell your car seats at garage sales, consignment, CL, b/c the buyer can't know if anything's happened to them (e.g. been in an accident) despite what you tell them.
Do people generally not buy used car seats? Little E is about to grow out of his infant seat and H bought him the next size up, so we'll have 2 that are in great condition, no accidents, etc. but are of no use to us any longer (we're not having any more kids). If we can't sell them, what do people do with used car seats?
I would not buy a used car seat. I might buy one off of a family member or close friend, but definitely not randomly.
We knew we were having more kids so we kept ours and will likely either use it again for a 3rd or it will end up expiring.
If I wasn't doing that, I would ask around w/ my family & circle of friends to see if they knew of anyone who needed one. If that failed, I'd donate it to a nonprofit for moms, especially teen moms, who needed these things.

Lots of people buy and sell used carseats in my neighborhood. I know you're not "supposed" to, but that's the reality. They aren't supposed to be given away to strangers either for the same reasons they aren't supposed to be sold. There are occasionally car seat recycling events, but those don't seem very common. I gave our infant seat to a friend of a friend that was in need. I hate the idea of sending a perfectly good seat to a landfill, so I would have offered it free on CL or the like if I hadn't found someone that I knew who needed it.
Some people are wary about buying used car seats also because they don't last as long and they don't get the full use of it before it expires. I, personally, would never buy a used car seat because I feel it is one baby item that should be bought new. I'm not sure I would trust a used one even if it was from someone that I trusted.

As long as you know the seat is fine (no recalls or accidents) then IMO it's fine to sell. It's up to the buyer to determine their personal comfort level with a used seat.
My brother gave us his infant's seat because they're done having kids and it still had some years left on it.
I would also say that as long as you know it's safe, there's nothing wrong with selling it. Try selling via FB first, as someone might be looking for a deal but also want to buy from someone they know.
They have used carseats for sale at my local kids consignment shop. You could always go that route and then you're done with it and don't have to worry about who will or won't buy it. The $$ will be less, but so will your hassle.
Some people will, some won't. I agree with trying to sell it on Fbook first so it will be people you have a personal connection to. Make sure to say it's never been in an accident and include the expiration date/serial number.
