The only thing is that I feel like "enlighten. educate. empower." or something similar is like almost every non-profit out there. If I saw that tagline, it wouldn't really tell me anything about what the group does that is different from a women's group or a children's group. Does that make any sense at all?

No, it totally makes sense! Hopefully with our name + tagline, it will give enough on a business card.
It's not our mission statement, we still have a formal one of those. It will just be a blurb on the back of a business card, or on t-shirts, etc.
I get it. The phrasing just seems a bit common and overused and I am pretty sure whatever you are doing is not common or overused. And yes, I know I am being absolutely no help here.
