Although to be honest, most restaurants in the touristy areas end up being kind of family friendly if you eat early enough
Thanks for the rec.
Any other restaurants with good food in the touristy areas? I'd like to avoid cardboard pizza if we can, haha. The last family trip we went on, we ate the worst food.

Agreed. A lot of the "trendy" places are plenty loud; you wouldn't exactly be interrupting a quiet, romantic dinner if you brought kids there. I think you'd be fine at Jaleo, Zaytinya, Founding Farmers, Graffiato's or District Commons with kids if you want a nicer dinner out. For more casual options, there's La Tasca, Tonic, Matchbox, Ella's Pizza, Old Ebbitt Grill, District Taco... I'm sure there are lots of others that I am forgetting.
For lunches, I'd suggest the food court at the Ronald Reagan building (very close to the Natural History Museum and some of the other Smithsonians) or the cafeteria at the Museum of the American Indian. Near the White House, there's a Cosi and a Potbelly's near 17th & Pennsylvania; on G Street between 17th & 18th, there are a few other sandwich places (Ellipse Cafe, G Street Foods, Cafe Phillips).

I agree with everything jenn248 says too. Rosa Mexicana would work with kids too. There are just families with kids everywhere down there so its fine. Graffiato is amazing. Zengo is fun too
I like Teaism (the 8th St nw location is near the mall) and, it sounds strange, but the food at the Native American Museum is amazing. I really like the wild rice salad (I typically get a side plate...so many delicious sides!)
We are in DC for 3 weeks with our kids and have been to a several places. We liked Founding Farmers a lot for a good family friendly restaurant with good food.

These are off the tourist path, but I love Cactus Cantina and 2 Amy's.
Also, if you are by the capitol during the day keep in mind that anyone can eat at the staff cafeterias in the Dirksen and Longworth buildings. The food isn't amazing, but they have good stuff sometimes and there aren't a ton of other options in the area. Also it is generally the same food but cheaper than the Capitol Visitors Center and you might end up in line behind Nancy Pelosi or something.
We loved Jaleo and Zaytinya, and so did DD (3/4). They are loud, and we go at 630ish. Carmines is more casual, family style Italian that was pretty good. We also like Thai CHef, Thaiphoon, and Aztel in DuPOnt circle.
We live in the area and have 3 kids all 6 and under. District taco is good and very price friendly for kids (less than $30 for all 5 of us to eat). Founding Farmers is also great for kids just make reservations now to get the date you want.

I'd like to thank everyone for the restaurant recommendations. Unfortunately, we had a larger group than I originally anticipated and even though I made my (your) suggestions, I was not in charge and alas we ended up at crappy restaurants.
One day when it's just me and/or a smaller group I will use this list.

Where did you go?
Starbucks for breakfast. Some pub I can't remember the name of for lunch- trust me it wasn't good. California Pizza Kitchen for dinner.
Yep. What a disappointment. I was so excited to try some of the restaurants posted.
