I know that H has a policy through his service, but now that we have two houses we need an additional policy to cover both. I want to go through Liberty Mutual since all our other insurance is through them, but I am scared that if something were to happen to him while he was deployed that a standard policy would not cover him. I talked with an agent about my concerns and she said it would, but did not sound too confident. I know USAA offers a policy specifically for Active duty member to supplement what they have and I am wondering if that is a better option. The price they have quoted us is much higher than Liberty Mutual. We do not use USAA because we have never been able to get good rates for any of our policies through them, despite never having any claims on either homeowners or vehicle insurance. Do any of you know anything about supplemental life insurance policies? Thanks!
I'm active duty. Due to my specific type of service, there are very few companies who will insure me (I'm an aviator), so my policy is through Globe Life. My husband is a teacher, and his policy is through Liberty Mutual.
Generally speaking, any company who will cover him at all SHOULD cover any deployment-related causes of death, but it's important to ask. Also, keep in mind that if you buy a whole-life policy, he might not hit his full benefit level until a year into his policy. Term life, on the other hand, should cover him fully right away. My point is don't wait until right before he leaves to look into this:-)
We do all of our financial planning, including life insurance, through First Command. I know some people have had issues with them, but I never have, and I think they are awesome. I've heard really good things about USAA's financial planning as well, but I personally prefer to sit down and talk with someone face-to-face. That's just me though:-)
USAA is a really fantastic company, and their customer service is amazing. I would highly recommend you look into at least doing your banking through them, and keep checking back with them on auto and homeowner policies -- the next time you PCS you might find their rates competitive for your new location. Personally, if they are only a LITTLE bit more expensive then I still go with them because their service is SO GOOD, but I have been stationed in places where USAA wanted to charge me twice as much as say, Progressive, and I've switched. Then I've PCSed again, found USAA's rates competitive, and switched back. It's worth checking every now and then when your situation changes.

Thanks, after speaking with the agent again and asking a lot of questions, I think the Liberty Mutual policy will work for us. It is a term life policy.
I hear that USAA is amazing and I would love to work with them, but their rates on nearly every policy I have priced with them has been more than $100 more than what other companies have offered for similar or better coverage. I am really disappointed that we have not been able to get competitive rates from them and have told agents that when I spoke with them. One agent was willing to negotiate a lower price for me, but at that point I was just annoyed. Maybe one day they will work out for us. I will keep asking!
