Where do you live? This place has limited drop off locations (MD, PA, DC, NJ, and CT), but it's a good one. Based in Baltimore. www.music4more.org/
Here is another one. www.instrumentsofchange.com/ I don't know much about it, but it's listed as a partner for one I do know about (http://nowiplayalongtoo.org/)
I went to a local music store for my parents that donates them through a program with the local symphony. They got more donation value than they were anticipating.

Thanks for posting this! I live in Baltimore and my cello (from 1994 I think?) is collecting dust in my parents basement. Donating it is such a great idea!

Yay!! A couple of the bands I follow do events with them
Now I Play Along is run by a local NoVA band. They are all sorts of awesome, and generally nice guys, too.
Call your local school district and see if they accept stringed instruments. Schools are always looking for loaner instruments for kids who don't have their own.
Hmmm, at that price I would consider selling and donating the sale proceeds, or selling and buying a nice purse/pair of shoes/camera lens/upgrade my hotel stay at WDW. You'll have to pay to get them appraised whether you sell or donate, so you might as well get money rather than a tax write-off, right?

Donate to a local school that has an orchestra. Believe me, they will go to good use. Get the write off. I get instruments donated to my school all the time and they are ALWAYS well appreciated. Every year I have to turn kids away because they can't afford an instrument and I cannot provide one for everyone who needs one. I hate turning kids away. 90% of the time we can find another instrument they are interested in and provide that, but there is always that kid who always wanted to play just one instrument.
